Today's Top Story
Scientists at Temple’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine have discovered that consuming extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in early adulthood could protect against a form of dementia.
WHO figures show around 50 million people worldwide have dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases each year, affecting 5-8% of the general population aged 60 or over. That makes this BIG news indeed!
Australia
Australian and New Zealand food regulation ministers have agreed the Health Star Rating (HSR) system should remain voluntary. They will take on board certain recommendations, agreeing it “should continue with some amendments”, following a forum meeting in Christchurch.

Look out for the industry update on the outcomes of the forum meeting in regard to edible oils in the coming December edition of Olivegrower & Processor.
(Olive growers) Janine and Steve Milton say the cost of fire damage to their property was about $200,000 (ABC South West/Georgia Loney).
Farmers say they have been left with a near $1 million damage bill after a Western Australian Government agency was deemed not liable for a bushfire which started on its own pine plantation.
A new industry partnership with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has opened up a $1.3 trillion market for Australian businesses. The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) announced on Thursday that a new partnership with Alibaba – often described as the Chinese equivalent of Amazon – would make it easier for Australian retailers to access millions of Chinese customers.

Opportunities
WA: Consumer insight testing - Singapore
Registrations of interest are open for WA food and beverage businesses to participate in DPIRD's pilot study testing consumer preferences in the Singapore market. Working with project partner Curtin University’s Consumer Research Lab, biometrics testing will be conducted in WA on 40 Asian consumers to examine consumers’ responses toward a food product or brand that shows export capability and intention. These insights will be supplemented with an in-market survey of 80 consumers in Singapore.
For the testing, each industry partner will need to choose and provide ONE of the following categories of marketing stimuli (in digital format): imageries of brand or product concept, packaging, labelling, promotional materials, retail signage.
Businesses can register their preliminary interest by emailing foodindustryinnovation@dpird.wa.gov.au with your business name and products/brands for testing. Formal applications will be sought in early December.

New Zealand

Olive growers have more than doubled production after trials using new techniques, which could see the local share of the olive oil market grow to 20%. Wairarapa grower Craig Leaf-Wright, who has a 4000-tree grove, said each of his trees was now averaging 25 kilograms of olives a year, compared with the New Zealand average of less than 10kg.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has introduced the 2019 version of its ‘Health Foods Naming Directory’ to standardise the naming of products.
An audit done between 2015 and 2019 found that half of all extra virgin olive oil on supermarket shelves still fails to meet accepted standards for the grade, Greenberg writes (Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images file photo).

Everyone has to eat. Across all borders and cultures, we all rely on food. But this universal truth makes consumers vulnerable to unscrupulous food industry players who engage in unethical, if not illegal, labeling practices.
The Agricultural Research Service, the US Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency, focuses on solutions to agricultural problems affecting America. In this new Tellus feature, "Under the Microscope", they interviewed ARS molecular biologist Lisa Ainsworth to learn more about crop responses to global atmospheric change.

Concerns about the negative impact of deteriorating soil health on food quality and quantity have prompted a fast-paced hunt for new ways to regenerate the land, and while many techniques are promising they often come with long return returns on investment that push traditional funding out of reach for most farmers.
"Olive oil is the new wine." It's a phrase that we at ABC10 have been hearing a lot lately. But what on Earth does it mean? After all, olive oil can't be sipped from a glass. It's non-alcoholic, used for cooking and warm, crispy bread dipping.

A diet high in trans fats could put you at increased risk for dementia, researchers have revealed after studying 1,600 people over 10 years.

The message is clear: reduce the risk, swap to EVOO!
