Parents Turn To Cannabis For ASD, Even As Doctors Urge Caution
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

Less than a year ago, Erica Daniels, a Horsham, Pa. mother of two, did what once upon a time she would have considered unthinkable. She gave her son Leo, who has autism and is now 12, a dose of cannabis oil - marijuana.

Medical researchers generally argue that evidence for the drug's effectiveness in treating autism is lacking and its safety is unproven.

Study with Infants Suggests Color Categorization is Biological
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

A team of researchers with members from the University of Sussex and the University of California has found evidence that suggests color categorization in humans is biological rather than learned. Though much of how the infant brain works and develops remains a mystery, University of Iowa researchers say they have uncovered a new mode of communication between two relatively distant regions. And, it turns out that sleep is key to this communication.

Scientists Conclude ADHD a Neurological not a Behavioral Disorder
[Source:  Huffington Post]

The largest-ever brain imaging study on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has led scientists to say the condition should be considered a neurological disorder, not just a behavioral one.

The brain structures of children with ADHD differ in small but significant ways from those of normally developing children, according to the findings, which were published online in the journal Lancet Psychiatry on Feb. 15.

Pet Dogs Help Kids Feel Less Stressed
[Source: Science Daily]

Darlene Kertes and colleagues tested the commonly held belief that pet dogs provide social support for kids using a randomized controlled study - the gold standard in research.

"Many people think pet dogs are great for kids but scientists aren't sure if that's true or how it happens," Kertes said. Kertes reasoned that one way this might occur is by helping children cope with stress. "How we learn to deal with stress as children has lifelong consequences for how we cope with stress as adults."

When you have a speech delayed child, many people blow it off as being no big deal. No, it's not the end of the world and yes, kids develop at different rates - but to you and your child, it is a big deal. School Nurses: Corner: Why We Need School Nurses
Editor's Note:  Wednesday, May 10th is National School Nurses Day.   Please share this excellent article that we found on the National Association of School Nurses website.

PT Corner: Strong Outer Hips (Aka Abductors)
[Source: Starfish Therapies]
