NEW & UPDATES
Library Closed June 15 through June 18
The Library will be closed from Thursday, June 15 through Sunday, June 18, for abatement of asbestos piping. We plan to resume normal hours on Monday, June 19 at 9am. Please check our website for any updates or changes to this schedule .

Updated Sunday Hours 
The Library will be closed on Sundays through Sunday, October 8. We will reopen Sundays from 1pm-5pm beginning Sunday, October 15.

Saturday Hours in July & August 
The library will be open half-days on Saturdays (9am-1pm), starting on July 1 through August 26. We will be closed Saturday, September 2nd in observance of Labor Day, and will resume full-day Saturdays on September 9.

Farmers_ market fruit stand Storytime and Pop-up Library at the Farmers' Market
Thursdays in the Summer, beginning June 8

Join us at the Belmont Farmers' Market Events Tent each week for this fun, all-ages storytime! Located in the town center parking lot (Channing Road and Cross Street). Starts June 8 and runs all summer long.

The Library will also have a "pop-up" Library once a month at the Farmers' Market. Come grab bestsellers, learn about our summer activities, and enter contests!

Learn How to Make Ice Cream

Tai Chi at the Library

Join us on Saturday, June 24th for tai chi at the Library. Tai chi practitioner and coach, Aisling O'Shea, will guide you through this beautiful and low impact form of martial art and meditation. This year's Adult Summer Reading Program, Build a Better World, runs from June 12 through August 19. We'll be hosting fun programs like movies, game nights and craft nights, as well as honoring this year's theme with activities including a canned food drive in July. Check below for ways you can participate, we've got a lot of great prizes for you this summer!

Starting June 12th, you can: 
  • Register for our Adult Summer Reading Program online or in the Library and be automatically entered to win a new Kindle Fire!
  • Once you've registered and started reading, fill out a book review online or come into the library and submit one in person. Each week we'll have a drawing for prizes, as well an end-of-the-summer drawing for a new Kindle Fire.
  • Grab a Bingo sheet from the Library or download one online. Get five across, up or down, or diagonal, and come in to claim a Starbucks gift certificate. Or, go for a "blackout" and check off all boxes, and get an even bigger prize (1 per patron).

The June meeting of the senior book discussion group will be on Friday, June 9th at 11:00 AM at the Beech Street Center at 266 Beech Street in Belmont; Daisy Miller by Henry James will be discussed. The senior book discussion group is co-sponsored by the Belmont Public Library and the Belmont Council on Aging. All are welcome to attend.
KIDS   
Kids of all ages are invited to participate in the Belmont Public Library's summer reading program! Kids set their own reading goal and, when they reach their goal, get a book as a prize. Parenting Workshop: Kindergarten Readiness
Come to this workshop and find out what teachers really expect your child to be able to do at the beginning of the school year. Parents will be provided with tips and strategies to help their child be more prepared for the transition to Kindergarten. Registration suggested but not required . Presented by Megan Olowinski, M.A. CCC-SLP Speech and Language Pathologist. Brought to you by the Coordinated Family and Community Education Grant.

Teen Summer Reading 
If you're a teen living in Belmont or neighboring communities and you're entering grades 7-12 in September, 2017, sign up for our Summer Reading Program. Sign up between June 12 and July 20 and be automatically entered to win tickets to the Red Sox in August! We also have trivia questions, scratch tickets, and book review raffles throughout the summer, Thursday night movies, game nights and craft nights, and an end-of-the-summer party!

COMMUNITY EVENTS  
ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS' COMPUTER WORKSHOP
This class is specifically for seniors who know nothing about computers but want to learn. You'll find out what makes up a computer, how it works and what you can do with it. When the class is finished, you will be given your own Windows 7 computer to KEEP!
 
Taught by Town of Belmont IT Manager David Petto. Transportation will be provided via BelderBus from Beech Street Center to Town Hall and back. Limited to 10 participants, you must pre-register by calling 617-993-2970 or stop by the Beech Street center front desk.
 
12 Tuesday/Thursday sessions, June 27-August 8, 10-11am

PICKLE BALL
The Belmont Recreation Department invites you to play Pickleball! Part badminton, part tennis, part table tennis, players use paddleballs to hit a whiffle ball over a modified tennis net. Drop-in or join one of the beginning sessions, more information can be found on the Recreation Department's website, http://www.belmont-ma.gov/recreation , or by calling 617-993-2670.
Spring/Summer Schedule, beginning May 30: Tuesdays at 10am, Thursdays at 6pm, Sundays at 10am. $20 for the season/$5 a day drop-in fee
Beginner Program on Wednesdays (first day May 31) from 6-8pm. 3 sessions, run May 31-July 5, July 12-August 16, and August 23-September 27. $50 per session.

RETIREMENT: A FINANCIAL INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE
Learn about the various retirement accounts that exist, the investment options that people can consider and the companies that handle people's money for retirement. Bridget Bearden, guest lecturer, is not a financial advisor nor a tax advisor, but a market research professional. Content and discussion will be for educational purposes only and should not be construed as advice.
This class is open to residents of all towns, sponsored by the Belmont Council on Aging with support from individual donations.
 
Cost: $30 for all 3 classes, paid to the Town of Belmont at the time of registration.

The Council on Aging needs 6 or more registered participants to being this course (checks will be held until class beings).
