2019: The Year of Basic Income Experiments

Over the past few years, the debate and conversation around basic income has grown from a small group of policymakers and researchers to a broader group of individuals and organizations across many parts of society. 2019 may be the year where many of the theories get tested.

Highly anticipated experiments like the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration in California, the Magnolia Mother's Trust in Jackson, Mississippi, and the pilots run by the Y Combinator Research team, among others, both nationally and internationally, will shed light on the many questions that have yet to be answered.

As the experiments are rolled out, the Basic Income Lab will continue to contribute to the UBI discussions through ongoing research and engagement with policymakers and practitioners.

This Spring, the Lab will launch the first phase of its user-friendly online visualization of UBI research - literature, findings and gaps - to enable the field to progress more methodically and help new experimenters contribute effectively to the broader UBI research agenda. We look forward to sharing this research with you as we continue to strive to foster a more informed public debate about basic income and how it might be implemented.
