November Regulatory Dates for Broadcasters - Ownership Reports, Comment Deadlines, LPTV Reimbursement Filing Deadline, a Forum to Examine the Future of the Broadcast Industry, and More

November is not one of those months with due dates for renewal filings, EEO public file reports or quarterly issues programs reports. Some of those obligations wait until December, when renewal filings for radio stations in Georgia and Alabama are due by December 2 (as December 1 falls on a weekend). Due for uploading on or before December 1 are EEO public file reports for station employment units with 5 or more full-time employees for radio or television stations in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Vermont.  Read More

AG Nessle Willing to take on FOIA Fights
The Alpena News reported that Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said she is willing to take on cases related to the Michigan Freedom of Information or Open Meetings acts.   Read More

Sage/DASDEC Required Updates Now Available - Install by November 8
Both Sage and DASDEC have announced availability of required updates for their EAS boxes, which must be installed by November 8. Sage announced October 30 that its long awaited ENDEC update (Rev95) that is necessary for the expiring digital certificate has been cleared for distribution.  Read More

ABIP 11Reserve Your 2020 ABIP Inspection Now
Scheduling has begun for the 2020 Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP). The MAB conducts these alternative inspections regionally from April to October.  Learn More

Nexstar Broadcasting's WLNS-TV (Lansing) has announced that Audrey Dahlgren has been appointed Sports Director for the station.  Read More

Michigan Radio Named Recipient of Google News Innovation Challenge
Google News Initiative (GNI) announced that Ann Arbor's Michigan Radio (WUOM-FM/WFUM-FM/WVGR-FM) has been named a 2019 recipient of their first North America Innovation Challenge, an international program that funds projects bringing new ideas into the news industry.  Read More

The National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) has released its list of finalists for the 2019 NETA Awards. Each year, the NETA Awards honor public television's best work in education, community engagement, marketing/communications and content.   Read More

Fred Remley, Former WUOM Intern, UM Media Faculty Member, Dies at 90
Frederick M. Remley, age 90, died peacefully at his home in Ann Arbor on October 22, 2019. Fred had enjoyed a lifelong career in radio and television at the University of Michigan.   Read More

WJLB Presents 36th Annual Coats for Kids
iHeartMedia's WJLB-FM (Detroit) will hold its 36th annual Coats for Kids event this Saturday, November 2 from Noon to 6 p.m. at Allegiant One Stop in Warren.  The station is working with the Salvation Army of Eastern Michigan.   Read More

iHeartMedia WKQI-FM (Detroit) morning personality Mojo has kicked off "Mojo's Breaking and Entering Christmas Wish" again for 2019 in an effort to provide Christmas for those in need.  This will be the 16th year of the campaign.   Read More

WSGW Launches Food For Families Campaign
Alpha Media's WSGW-AM/FM (Saginaw) has launched its annual Food for Families campaign, designed to raise non-perishable food donations to help those in need served by Salvation Army offices in its coverage area.   Read More

Radio Has Strong Partnerships in the Ionia County Area
On Friday, October 18, WION (Ionia) held it's annual broadcast with the "Link Crew"; students of Ionia High School just ahead of the homecoming game. This annual event raises money for the students of the Link Crew who are known for their mentoring and leadership roles with other younger students in the school.   Read More

Karla Vanderhorst is currently the Special Projects Producer for WXMI-FOX 17 in Grand Rapids. Over the last 19 years, she has worked in a variety of departments and positions, including Programming Coordinator and Production Manager. She's intrigued by all facets of television and feels fortunate to work at a station that allows her to explore these interests. When she is not at work, you will find her spending time reading, laughing or dancing and trying to provoke her husband, infant daughter and dog into joining her.
