Phase 1 of Magnolia Beautification Project fundraising goal achieved – thank you donors and supporters
The Magnolia community has raised the $120,000 needed to commence with Phase 1 of the Magnolia Beautification Project aimed at improving our Magnolia Village sidewalks and streetscape.

“We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our neighbors, community supporters and local businesses,” says Cheryl McQuiston, chair of the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce’s Beautification Committee and spearheading the beautification project and its five phases. “We are immensely grateful to all of our donors – our community is amazing.”

Donations to date have ranged from $25 dollars in cash to donors and businesses who have given $2500, $5000 or $10,000 dollars, and two donors who invested $25,000 in the project. Donors respond to the project’s goals and intended outcomes: A more welcoming commercial district and a socially active Magnolia Village that boasts attractive seating, stylish bistro lighting, sturdy poles with flowering hanging baskets, seasonal banners, and other community-inspired upgrades that will be sustainably maintained year-round.

Phase 1 includes improvements to the sidewalk areas on either side of McGraw Street between 32nd and 33rd Avenues. The next four phases of the beautification project will be reviewed, evaluated, and hopefully, approved by the city of Seattle. All project-related purchases, placement, and activities will be done in compliance with the permits.

“With the support of our donors and the approval by the city, we have now been able to start the Phase 1 improvements along the main Village corridor,” says McQuiston. “We are submitting the plans for Phase 2 and anxiously await consideration by the city and building more community support.”

The fundraising goal for Phase II will be approximately $80,000, depending on permit approval, and will include adding new benches, poles and flowering baskets, porous pavement around existing trees, and the planting of a new Magnolia tree.

“We are focused on fundraising for Phase II, which envisions improving the sidewalks and streetscape on both sides of McGraw Street between 33 rd  Ave and 34 th  Avenues,” says McQuiston. “Improving the streetscape will assist in keeping and attracting businesses while enhancing Magnolia Village’s experiences for neighbors and visitors alike.”

City of Seattle Awards Matching Funds to the Magnolia Beautification Project
On Monday, October 28 th , the city of Seattle announced that the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce received a $25,000 Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) grant.

The NMF grant was awarded based on the merits of Phase 1 of the Magnolia Village Beautification Project and its consistency with the city’s Department of Neighborhood’s founding principle that city and community partnerships strengthen Seattle.

With the announcement of the matching grant, the beautification project receives another endorsement by the city of Seattle. The city has not only reviewed, evaluated, approved and permitted Phase I of the beautification project, it is now investing in its success.

The members of the Magnolia Beautification Committee will be working closely with the city in the weeks ahead to ensure the Phase 1 projects stays in full compliance with both the permit and the grant.
We’re Getting Started – Phase 1 launches on November 11 th
Monday, November 11 th  is a banner day for the Magnolia Beautification Project. Work begins on installing environmentally sensitive, highly permeable, slip resistant, and flexible and durable Porous Pave™. Working side-by-side with the city of Seattle's Department of Transportation arborists, the use of the compost-like material has been carefully reviewed and approved by the city.

Already applied around the Magnolia tree in front of Vixen, located in the 3200 block of McGraw Avenue, the LEED qualifying Porous Pave™ material diminishes the deleterious effects of untreated stormwater and allows for water to soak more naturally into the trees planted around the Magnolia Village.

Members of the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee chose, and the city of Seattle approved Porous Pave™ due to its resistance to crumbling, cracking, as well as oil, UV rays, transmission fuels and other material that can negatively impact porous paving material. As an eco-friendly surfacing material, it is made of recycled tires, stone aggregate and a proprietary binding agent that is not only highly porous and durable, it will help protect and nurture our Magnolia Village trees while making the tree wells safer for pedestrians.

Application of the product will take approximately two days and generally cures in 24 hours. If you want to know more about Porous Pave™, please click  here
