Harper's Choice Middle School Students of the Month
It is an HCMS tradition to recognize outstanding students each month as students of the month. Each grade level, and their Related Arts and World Language Teams select two individuals for this distinction. The criteria on which the selection is based for each team are listed below.
6th grade students of the month consistently demonstrate the 3 R's and work hard. They are chosen for their positive contributions to the school and for being caring, energetic students who are good role models. They have a "can-do" attitude and persevere through obstacles. These students are polite, courteous and treat others the way they would like to be treated. They are self-motivated and go beyond basic expectations.

7th grade students of the month exhibit great work habits, participate in class discussions, and have a desire to do their best on the tasks that they are given in their classes. These students are polite, respectful and helpful to others. They are also responsible and positive role models for their peers.

8th grade students of the month go above and beyond showing the 3 R's everyday! They are students who go through their day building positive relationships, showing responsibility, and are always respectful.

Related Arts students of the month are individuals who go above and beyond in demonstrating Harper's Choice Middle School's three R's of Respect, Responsibilities, and building Relationships. They set the example by being leaders in the classroom with the quality of their assignments and working cooperatively and in a positive manner with their classmates. They are role models for every student in the school.

World Language students of the month participate actively and volunteer frequently in class using the target language (French or Spanish). They are students who demonstrate respect, responsibility, and an eagerness to learn. These individuals maintain positive relationships with their teachers and peers. Introduction to Jewelry Design Bracelet, Necklace & Earring Set!!

All classes are from 6-8pm on the following dates
Tuesday, May 16th & Thursday, May 18 (two sessions)
Tuesday, June 13th & Thursday, June 15th (two sessions)
Designed for beginners and students in need of a refresher class. Have fun learning stringing techniques for creating a rhinestone bracelet and necklace. Enjoy exploring steps for wire-wrapping and pair of earrings. Using a variety of tools, including wire cutters and pliers, you will gain the basic skills for creating your very own jewelry designs. This workshop is sure to ignite your creative desire to continue producing your own jewelry designs at home! All supplies included.

Exploring Columbia On Foot, Outdoor Walks
The walks will be held on nine Thursdays and one Saturday from March through October. Most walks will begin at 10am; the walk at The Mall in Columbia begins at 8:30am. Registration is not required.

Columbia Smart Energy Challenge: Information Session
June 8, 2017; 7-8pm at Kahler Hall in Harpers Choice
The Columbia Smart Energy Challenge, a six-month program that began Jan. 1, further encourages individuals to improve comfort while reducing energy bills through home energy upgrades, leveraging BGE's Home Performance with the ENERGY STAR Program. The Smart Energy Challenge provides additional incentives to residents as a way to raise awareness and increase the number of audits conducted.

* Home energy audits are $100 (a $400 value)
* Rebates cut the cost of energy improvements by 50 percent (up to $2,000 total)
* Earn $50 when you refer a friend who completes an energy audit
* Help your neighbors! Any village that completes at least 10 energy audits during the challenge will have a celebration - with 100 free LED lightbulb giveaways to residents

4th Of July Parade
The 46th annual Longfellow Friends of the Traditional 4th Parade will take place on Tuesday, July 4, rain or shine, at 10am. Lineup begins at 9:15 in the parking lot of Longfellow Elementary School. It will travel from one end of Hesperus Drive to the other, and return to the school via Eliot's Oak Road. No advance registration!

Rain gardens
are one of the simplest and most effective ways to "green" your landscape and manage storm water. A rain garden is a shallow, planted depression that absorbs the water that flows from your roof, patio or yard, allowing it to drain directly into the soil.
The Columbia Association, through a grant from MD DNR, will pay 75% of the installation costs of rain gardens on residential property and has a landscape firm on contract for installation. This program serves Columbia residents whose property is located in the Little Patuxent Watershed. Most properties in Harper's Choice qualify. We have several brochures available at Kahler Hall that explain the program, show costs, templates and photos. With the summer approaching, more and more families are going to rely on the Howard County Food Bank to support their food needs. The Food Bank could use your help in stocking up on fruit cups, juices, cereal, tuna, and healthy protein snacks. In-kind donations should be delivered to the Food Bank (9385-J Gerwig Lane, Columbia).

Howard County Head Start is recruiting for the current school year and the next school year. For more information, check us out online at www.cac-hc.org.
· Financial donations can be used to help fund clients' dairy product needs. CAC spend about $1,000 per month to purchase milk and eggs to support approximately 500 families. A gift of $20 helps CAC provide ten families enough milk and eggs. It's easy to donate online.

Architectural Committee Meeting Date Change
Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require approval of the Village Architectural Committee (AC).
The AC will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 PM to review applications.
The deadline to submit applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date.
