Dear Colleagues:

One of my favorite responsibilities as dean is reviewing the dossiers of faculty members who are being considered for promotion, tenure, or reappointment. I enjoy learning about our faculty, and I am glad this task comes along each year during the winter holidays because I can focus all of my attention on the hundreds of pages written by or about our faculty members. It also gives me an opportunity to carefully and thoughtfully craft my own letters to the provost regarding  our faculty members' careers in our college.

With each dossier, I gain an in-depth perspective on that faculty member's time and efforts, including their approach to teaching, how they have advanced the profession through their scholarship, and what they have done to support the professional communities they work in.

Because our college is dedicated to teaching and training students, a critical element in determining whether or not a faculty member is promoted, tenured, or reappointed is their effectiveness as a teacher. Like other parts of the dossier, this aspect must be supported with documentation, such as critiques from students enrolled in the faculty member's courses, and teaching evaluations conducted by our other college faculty. Together, these provide meaningful proof of a faculty member's competence in creating the optimum learning experience for our students.

Another part of the review process -- and one that I value highly -- is reading the letters prepared by faculty from other institutions who assess the professional accomplishments of our faculty members and their impact on our college, the university, and their discipline. I spend considerable time studying these letters as I look for comments I can quote in my own letters of support for each faculty member's continued service in our college.

Getting promoted, tenured, or reappointed at Ohio State is a rigorous process that everyone takes seriously. This is as it should be since the faculty define what the institution stands for, while also contributing to its reputation around the campus, the country, and the world.

How rewarding it is for me to learn so much about our faculty each year. I am always proud of their accomplishments and the opinions expressed by others who comment on them and their work. We are fortunate to have such dedicated and respected faculty who educate our students, engage in research, and support our profession. I am honored to be their colleague and their dean.

Happy New Year!
