Dear Colleagues:

I will miss the Classes of 2017!

Tomorrow will be a remarkable day. We will graduate the dental hygiene and dental Classes of 2017. We will welcome them into the profession. We will celebrate their achievements with family and friends. And, we will say good-bye to them as they move on to the next chapters of their lives.

For the last few years that these students have been part of our college community, we have taught them, worked with them, and learned from them. Along the way, we have watched them grow and develop into the professionals they are today. We have gotten to know them and appreciate all they have done during their time in Postle Hall.

Every class is important to me, and although I try to get to know all our students as well as I can during the busy years we spend together, there are some classes I become more familiar with than others. Such is the case with the Classes of 2017. From the very beginning and throughout the past four years, I met with these students frequently at our college events and activities, and I sensed something special about these classes. Early on they demonstrated a willingness and capacity to lead, to get involved, and to do good for each other and our college.

I could count on these classes to support each other, to work hard together on college projects, and to represent us well -- no matter where they were or what they were engaged in. Whether it was doing well in anatomy class, getting board patients, finishing clinic requirements, supporting our Give Kids a Smile Day, building a Homecoming float, or organizing the Mandiball, these students worked with and helped each other. I often felt I could not thank them enough for the many things they did to make our college shine bright.

Yes, I will miss the Classes of 2017, but I will be so happy tomorrow to see them graduate and go on to do great things for their patients, their families, and everyone who has the good fortune to be with them. They will be superb members of the dental profession. They will represent Ohio State well, and they will make us all so very proud!
