PPMC facilitates conversations about
future use of Clapp Golf Course land

While working to develop their 2018 budget, City of Wichita officials discussed closing L.W. Clapp Golf Course due to its struggle with economic viability.

After city officials made the decision to close the golf course, the Public Policy and Management Center was asked by the City of Wichita to facilitate community conversations about the future of the land occupied by the golf course. We were pleased with the opportunity to bring diverse voices together to discuss how we can collectively help grow and develop this land into an asset that benefits our community.

Thanks to community voices coming together during our discussions about future use of the land, we were able to present the appointed transformation committee with ideas from those who will be most directly impacted by the committee's decisions.

Planning for fall events is
in full swing this summer

Summer means conference planning time at the PPMC. The majority of our big events happen all in a row during the fall and spring, so we spend our summers prepping and planning for the next round of training and professional development.

To give you a look at some of what we do, we've highlighted a few of our larger events and trainings below. This, of course, is not a comprehensive list of all we do in support of our mission to advance public good, but it's a broad sampling of our events:
Brenda Dietzman

Recently,  we hosted the City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers Association of Kansas  for its summer board and education meeting. The board members travel from all over the state to meet and work through topics to make sure city clerks are receiving training that's relevant and impactful as they continue to make their communities better.

Scott Stump
Kicking off our fall season, in September we will host  Engage WSU: A Day of Public Service Sharing. We are excited to have Brenda Dietzman provide "Parting Words" to encourage us to "Stay Curious" and Mayor Jermaine Wilson of Leavenworth as our closing speaker.

October will bring the Workforce Innovation Conference, a unique
Mike Condiff
partnership between the Kansas Board of Regents and the Kansas Department of Commerce, to address the Future of Work. The keynote speaker will be Scott Stump, Assistant Secretary for Career, Technical and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education. Presentations will include the following topics: Workplace Safety, Community Development and Addressing the Needs of the Tight Labor Market.

Hannes Zacharias
Next up is the Kansas Government Finance Officers Association Conference which will feature local government legends Mike Condiff of The Elim Group and Hannes Zacharias, the Robert A. Kipp Professor of Practice in Local Government Management and Urban Policy at the University of Kansas.
Dylan Thuras

In November, the  Kansas Museums Association (KMA) will host a fall conference - with more than 125 attendees who will be celebrating 50 years of KMA professional development conferences. These conferences help boost the state's museum industry and provide professional development opportunities for those who work in our museums. For KMA's 50th year, we are excited to announce Dylan Thuras as the conference's keynote speaker. Thuras is an author and co-founder of the website Atlas Obsuca, the definitive guide to the world's hidden wonders.
