STGECTHANK YOU, AGHP MEMBERS, FOR STGEC 2016 SUCCESS
AGHP played a strong role in the success of the Southeastern Transportation Geotechnical Engineering Conference (STGEC 2016) in November. Roughly 180 professionals, largely from DOTs and geotechnical consulting practices, gathered in Biloxi, Mississippi. Among the exhibitors were AGHP member companies GSI, Geobrugg, and Ameritech. Also, the AGHP could be found throughout the 38 technical presentations, which focused on topics such as foundations, drilling, sink holes, and GRS-IBS construction. Special recognition of AGHP and the Monitoring Committee was provided by John Metzger, who shared his geohazard management insight within the technical program. Thank you, John!

Have an event to recommend to your AGHP colleagues? Contact Becky Slaybaugh ([email protected]) and let us know where you will be sharing your experience with the geotechnical field.

STGECEXTRAORDINARY SINKHOLE & RESPONSE IN JAPAN
The nearly 6 million people who live in the metro area of Fukuoka, Japan experienced a highly unusual geotechnical event in the early morning hours of November 7. A 20m-wide and considerably deep sinkhole opened in a major intersection. The massive collapse severed water and power lines. Dramatic footage of the event was shared around the world.

Perhaps even more stunning, though, is the site’s recovery. In only a week, the hole was filled, water and power lines were re-established, surrounding foundations and transportation networks were fully secured, new roadway was installed, and traffic was reopened over the site.
