November 2019 Edition
Pastor’s Ponderings
The trees are showing off their Fall splendor and our community is settling into all things pumpkin spice with Thanksgiving just around the corner. We have so much to be thankful for at Emmanuel. I am particularly thankful for the opportunity to attend a Cursillo Weekend this past month. I was so uplifted and supported by those in the Cursillo community, especially at Emmanuel. I continue to find joy in my deepened relationship with God and the events of the weekend. I encourage everyone to join one of our many Bible Studies to enrich your own faith life and fellowship with our wonderful community.

Nancy Smith and I attended a gathering on Thursday evening, October 17 th of the first ever Humbolt Unified School District’s CAFÉ (Community and Family Engagement). This meeting brought together staff from each of the eleven schools and their church and community partners. Emmanuel has partnered with Liberty Traditional School for many years and we were introduced to LTS’s business partners: Papa Murphy’s Pizza and OneAZ Credit Union. Principal Danette Derickson, Assistant Principal Chet Johnston, and two teachers were also part of the discussion. Emmanuel has committed to provide $200 for the Nutrition Program to help students who may fall behind on their breakfast or lunch accounts. Other suggestions of support included encouraging congregation members to support the annual Walkathon and providing $75 student sport scholarships to assist with fees to participate on sports teams. Principal Danette will ask teachers to create a wish list of items that teachers need for classroom projects. All at the table agreed that this is the year the Liberty Traditional School should win the annual Food Drive—more information to come!

We have a new Nursery attendant for Sunday morning 10:30am worship! Heidi Espinoza has been hired to watch children 4 years old and under. Another great addition to the nursery is a paging system. Like the ones used by restaurants, parents are given a small pager when they sign their children into the nursery so they can be alerted if they are needed. The pagers are set to flash and vibrate so they do not interrupt worship. The system comes with a charging station allowing the pagers to be ready for use each Sunday.

Chuck Guenther and the finance committee have begun work on the 2020 church budget. Please hold them and the council and ministry teams in prayer as we consider the future financial needs for ministries at Emmanuel. Parker Northrup and the Stewardship team will be introducing the 2020 Stewardship program in the upcoming month and giving statements will be issued soon for you to review your progress for this past year.

As we enter the final month of the church year, we continue to look for opportunities to be present in our community. I will be holding office hours on most Thursday afternoons 2 – 4pm at the Flour Stone Cafe in the Entertainment District. The bakery is located right next to Garcia’s Restaurant across from the Harkins Theater at 2992 N. Park Avenue. Come join me for a cup of coffee or tea beginning Thursday, November 7 th.

Blessings,
Pr. Tricia Lowe
Singing aloud a song of thanksgiving,
and telling all your wondrous deeds.

Welcome,
Heidi Espinoza!
We're blessed to have Heidi join our staff to spend time with our youngest family members on Sundays during the 10:30am worship.
Inviting All Singers!
Join us in the Christmas Lessons and Carols service to be held on December 22 during the early service. Rehearsals are in progress, every Wednesday, 6:30 – 7:30pm.

The program’s tradition dates back to the 1800s with its involvement of the entire congregation including Scripture narrations. We add to that some bell ringing and choral pieces. All work together as a unit involving everyone to create a special musical service. Call Gene with questions or show up on Wednesdays to be involved in the choir—just for the Christmas season!

Endowment Committee
There has been a lot of media screen time devoted this year to the Endowment Fund and to Leaving a Legacy to Emmanuel Lutheran Church . We want to thank you for your patience in watching this information.

This has been a very positive year for the Endowment Fund. The Fund has been blessed by donations, and the donated cemetery plots were sold. There is now enough money in the Endowment Fund, according to the bylaws, and we are investigating where to invest the money. After that step has been accomplished, the next step is to begin distributing. As this process progresses, we will keep you informed as to what is happening.

If you have any questions, please contact anyone one the Endowment Committee. And if you have received an invitation to the dinner on November 5, please give prayerful thought and join us.
