Hello Friends,
Happy New Year!  We signed the papers to purchase Wingard's from Delores' parents on January 2, 2006.  That means we are starting our 13th year as garden center owners and managers this year.  While many of our friends are busy either being retired or planning to be retired, we are busy working to make Wingard's an even better shopping experience for all of you.  We are looking forward to creating a new entrance off Pilgrim Church Road and additional parking.  We had hoped to have it ready by spring, but it's looking like it will be completed this summer.  We're finally getting serious about a greenhouse, now that we have an experienced greenhouse grower, Tommy Harmon, working with us.  He will make sure we do it right!

A big thank you to our customers, suppliers and employees for being part of the Wingard's Family.  We hope you all had the merriest of Christmases and will enjoy peace, prosperity and planting in the New Year!

Wally & Delores Steinhauser

P.S. PLEASE NOTE: T he Produce Market and Wings & Things will be closed
January 8th through January 11th  for maintenance.

What You're Seeing in Your Yard
Be on the lookout for Winter Migrant
birds at your feeders like:
  1. Yellow-rumped Warblers - Impressive in the sheer numbers with which they flood the continent each winter. Shrubs and trees will be filled with the streaky brown-and-yellow birds and their distinctive, sharp chips.
  2. Dark-eyed JuncosOne of the most abundant forest birds of North America, you'll see juncos on woodland walks as well as in flocks at your feeders or on the ground beneath them.
  3. White-throated SparrowsCrisp facial markings make these an attractive bird as well as a hopping, flying anatomy lesson.
  4. Red-breasted NuthatchesThese long-billed, short-tailed songbirds travel through tree canopies, but stick to tree trunks and branches, where they search bark furrows for hidden insects.

Ask Zach

Do Purple Martins nest at Bomb Island?
  • No. Martins use Bomb Island as a "Pit Stop" on their migration to South America. Martins nest in large groups exclusively in birdhouses. Since they no longer nest in natural cavities, it is all the more important to see if you can set up a Martin House and become a Purple Martin Landlord. Every bird you see flying around Bomb Island was born in a man-made birdhouse!

Garden To-do List

The calendar may say winter,  but there is still plenty to do to keep you outside in the garden.

Get ahead of the game, prevent insects and fungus now!
  • January and February are the perfect time to treat your plants for insects and fungus.  While you may not see pesky insects on your plants, the eggs are there waiting to hatch in the Spring.  Your roses and crape myrtles may have dropped their leaves, but the spores of black spot fungus or powdery mildew are just waiting for warm weather so they can attack your plant.Furthermore, the insect called "scale" multiplies in the winter.  If you see little white specks on the stems or leaves of your plants, pick a nice winter day and get outside and give them a g
oodshower with an oil-based spray. Oil-based sprays are "organic" in that they smother the insect, its egg or the disease without using a toxic chemical.  Spray any plant in your landscape that tends to be attacked by insects or fungus.
    • We carry two different oil-based products:
      neem oil
      • Fertilome Horticultural Oil Spray- uses mineral oil (petroleum based)
      • Neem Oil - uses the oil of the Neem Tree
  • Do-It-Yourself Lawn Care Program - Time to Renew!
    • In order to receive the 15% discount on your lawn care program, you must prepay for all four steps before January 31st. This is not an automatic renewal. You have to sign up each year.
    • If you are ordering the same program as last year, you can just call us with a credit card payment, or stop by, and tell us you were a prepay customer last year.  We can look up the information we need to make the transaction.

Mahonia
What's Blooming
Winter Sun Mahonia - One of our favorite plants for cold-weather flowers, t his statuesque, evergreen shrub is a dramatic focal point for the winter garden. Its large, frond-like leaves develop in whorls along its coarsely branched stems. Great sprays of fragrant, yellow flowers in dense, upstanding clusters appear in late fall or early winter. Flowers develop into grape-like clusters of wax-coated black berries by late summer and autumn. Beautiful foliage and upright growth habit make this hybrid a strong focal point in the garden.  Unlike it's parent mahonia, this one will take full sun!
