Margaret Lento Filetto '88 keeps
SCA's front office running smoothly 

Margaret Lento Filetto '88 comes to St. Catharine Academy's Main Office from Orthonet where she served as an inventory analyst on the Aetna Contract. Now, she is often the first person people meet as they enter St. Catharine Academy. A graduate of Iona College, Margaret holds a degree in communications/advertising. She says, "I love working at SCA. It feels like I am finally back home."

When thinking back to her time at St. Catharine's she says one of her favorite memories is the Father/Daughter Dance, which she attended every year. "I came in second place in the dance contest every year, but senior year me and my dad won! I still display the trophy in my room to this day," she recalls.

Margaret also has fond memories of her classes and teachers. She says Ms. Lisa Ward had an impact on her. "She taught English and was in charge of the ski club. She took extra time to teach me how to ski and always encouraged me to participate," concludes Margaret.

Janell Alvarez '20 Participated
in CUNY CREST HIRES program
 
Janell Alvarez '20 spent her summer in the CUNY CREST HIRES program at City College. HIRES stands for  High School initiative in Remote Sensing of the Earth Systems Engineering & Sciences.

During the program, which ran through mid-August, Janell learned about NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) and the various fields of STEM, while earning three college credits. She also participated in research with a graduate mentor and a faculty mentor. Janell was able to show what she learned as a presenter at the CUNY Summer STEM Research Symposium.

Janell studied satellite data. "With my mentors, we analyzed data from the satellite GOES-17 and compared it to the data from GOES-16 within a certain area," she says. "The methods we used were based on what we were given from the researchers who work with NOAA. Python was the coding language we used to calculate the data and create the histograms and temperature curves."

Janell, who is considering STEM as a focus in college says, " When I looked at the main website for this program, I saw the perfect opportunity to participate in scientific research and learn about other STEM fields I did not know much about. After participating in the Ambassador Leaders Medical Summit last summer, I realized that being a doctor was not for me, but I still wanted to be involved in a STEM profession. I enjoyed this program because I gained experience in doing research and grew more accustomed to a college atmosphere."

Card Party 2019 made Maestro's Merry and Bright
 
Card Party 2019 kicked off the holiday season a little early this year with its Merry and Bright theme on Oct. 24 at Maestro's. Some 350 guests participated in an evening of fun, food and prizes galore. Some of the big prizes included a large screen television, a VIP Beach Club Membership for a family of four and a laptop, donated by NYC Councilman Mark Gjonaj.
 



Students Support My Sisters Place
during National Bullying Awareness Month

The First Monday of every October is World Day of Bullying Prevention. On this day students, schools, and communities all over the world go BLUE together against bullying. It also kicks off National Bullying Awareness Month. Our students dressed down in blue to use their voice and send a message that this is the day bullying prevention is heard around the world. Students, faculty, and staff donated their dress down money to My Sisters Place - a woman's shelter. 





SCA Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
In honor of the survivors and those fighting Breast Cancer, SCA raised over $700 that will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. 



Halloween in the Hallways
As the month ended, the annual Halloween Door Decorating Contest brought Jack O' Lanterns, black cats, witches and more to the hallways of St. Catharine's.

Exciting Fall Season for SCA Volleyball
 
The JV volleyball team won the Catholic High School Athletic Association Division 2 championship for the second year in a row triumphing over Notre Dame, Staten Island winning in two sets, 25-17 and 25-16. 

The Varsity had a fantastic season, going undefeated 10-0, but was defeated by Dominican Academy in the final game of the CHSAA Division 2 playoffs.  The Varsity placed second in Archdiocesan Volleyball Division 2.
