National divorce rate reaches 40-year low

In 2018, the overall U.S. divorce rate reached a 40-year low of 15.7 divorces per 1,000 married women, according to newly released ACS data. We also observed significant state-level variation throughout the country, with state-level divorce rates ranging from a low of 8.7 in North Dakota to a high of 25.9 in Arkansas. To learn more, take a look at our annual update to the national and state-level divorce rates: Divorce Rate in the U.S.: Geographic Variation, 2018 (FP-19-23) .
