Analyzing social behaviors of children from early childhood until adolescence, researchers found that those whose father was either very young or older at conception differed in how they acquired

New research finds that family structure including regular bedtimes, mealtimes, and limited screen time appear to be linked to better emotional health in preschoolers. Moreover, strong emotional health is believed to lower the chances of obesity later in life.

Ohio State researchers say the study is the first to look at the connections between early childhood routines and self-regulation and their potential association with weight problems in the pre-teen years.

[Source: Science Daily]

Children with autism experience more tantrums than children without, according to the researchers, and speech therapists, preschool teachers, parents and others often blame these frequent outbursts on speech and language problems. Some children with autism spectrum disorder are not able to speak or have speech that is not clear or well-understood by others.

Rainy Day Fun! Cotton Ball Races
[Source:  Meaningful Mama]

Cotton ball races are fun. There are rainy days around her in the great Pacific NW where we just don't go outside. I'm kind of a fair weather mom like that. However, if we are going to be stuck inside, we might as well do something active, different and fun. Cotton ball races will provide a great activity for those rainy indoor activities. I had them use snot suckers we have. You can also use turkey basters. Just choose your starting point and let the races begin. My husband and I were both able to jump in the fun too.

School Psych Corner:  What ClassDojo Monsters Can Teach Kids About Growth Mindset
[Source:  MindShift]

Many teachers are excited about the compelling research on the power of a growth mindset to change student perceptions of themselves as learners. Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck discovered that when kids receive a message that their brains are malleable and their abilities can be developed, they approach learning as a challenge that they are ready to embrace.

That message resonates with many teachers who have long wanted that type of classroom environment. But while the research is compelling, many teachers still struggle to weave growth mindset into their daily teaching practice.

Autism Corner: Teaching Social Skills to Learners on the Spectrum
[Source:  Best Practice Autism]

Impairment in social communication and interaction is a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Social skills deficits include difficulties with initiating interactions, maintaining reciprocity, taking another person's perspective, and inferring the interests of others.  Unfortunately, many children with ASD do not receive consistent and intensive social skills programming in school. This is problematic, especially considering social impairments may result in negative outcomes, such as poor academic achievement, social failure, isolation, and peer rejection, which often leads to co-occurring (comorbid) anxiety and depression.

The National Center for Learning Disabilities released Tuesday a new edition of its State of Learning Disabilities report which gathers sobering statistics, first-person articles, and suggestions educators, parents and lawmakers can use to support children and youth with learning and attention disabilities.
