Memories of Makawao
By: Stanley Sylva
My cousin Raymond had an old Model T. The small bed on it was the perfect size to hold a 55 gallon drum of molasses that we'd pick up from the sugar mill in Paia. We had a pasture over by Kokomo with beef steers on it. Usually we'd go cut horse cane with sickles first then mix it into the feed troughs filled with molasses but this time, we had other chores so we got the molasses first then went up Olinda to cut cane.
If you ever drive a Model T, it's very important to remember that they have mechanical brakes. Metal on metal. That means, when you drive it afield early in the morning to cut grass and there's dew on the ground and you have a drum of molasses in the back, all the way down from Olinda till St. Josephs Church, no stop !
