Dvar
Rabbi Kenter's D'var

One of the themes of this week is witnesses. We take two Torahs from the ark to serve as witnesses to Kol Nidre. In the Torah reading, Moses calls on heaven and earth to witness his final remarks to the Israelites. In order to make sure that a moment is remembered and that the lessons endure, witnesses are necessary to share what they experienced and pass it on to others who were not there or may not be aware.

One of the roles that we as the Jewish people have played through history is as witnesses. Whether to our own atrocities or to remind the world of the horrors that hatred and bigotry can cause. As a "light unto the nations", it is both our job to be an example of the best that humanity can be but is also our task to shine that light on the parts of our world that are too often ignored.

This confluence of bearing witness to the best and worst of the world was felt all the more acutely over Yom Kippur. We saw our community come together to sing, pray, and atone. We supported each other and engaged in meaningful worship as a shul community. At the same time, we bore witness to the horrific events in Halle, Germany as two people were killed after the shooter was unable to enter the synagogue.

As witnesses it is our job to tell our stories, the good ones and the bad. To remind the world what we are capable of, both positively and negatively. And through our own actions, model for the world the best of what humanity can offer with heaven, earth, and Torah as our witnesses.

Shabbat Shalom!

Donations
There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award.  These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow.  Below you will find some of the events in our community from the last few weeks.  Please continue to share with us your happy occasions so that we may share them here in the future.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, Sovereign of the universe
Who is good and bestows good

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue.  We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive. Todah Rabbah!

Voting by Special Ballot
