"At this juncture of the business cycle, the tension is almost palpable regarding the future state of the US economy. Slowing growth trends are evident in macroeconomic indicators such as US Industrial Production, US Real GDP, and US Total Retail Sales. Business confidence has taken a hit, as the headlines propagate issues ranging from tariffs to Brexit to an inverted yield curve. The OECD’s US Business Confidence Index is in Phase D, Recession, with the August monthly figure down 2.2% from August 2018. Declining trends in a host of leading indicators – ranging from our own ITR Leading Indicator™ to the ISM’s US PMI (Purchasing Managers Index) to the OECD’s US Leading Indicator – signal that US Industrial Production is likely to be in a business cycle declining trend into at least early next year. We expect annual average US Industrial Production to peak in the coming months before declining mildly into the first half of 2020."
