Dear Friend of Manna,
For many of us, summer is a time to slow down our routines, enjoy patriotic holidays, and take vacations. I've had the chance to attend a baseball game or two, putter in the garden, and enjoy time outdoors with loved ones.
We must not ignore the new challenges that arise for some families during the summer.
School is out, so consistent meals are often hard to come by for children living in poverty. Families have the additional
cost of childcare or camps during the day, which stretches already strapped budgets.
These neighbors can turn to Manna Food Center no matter what the season.
Fighting hunger is a year-round proposition for us, and your continued support during these summer months helps Manna fight hunger & feed hope for families across our community. Please consider a donation now to help us keep our shelves stocked.
Some ways that we respond to summer demands include offering food through recreational programs like "Food, Fun, and Fitness." We partner with local farmers and farmers markets to ensure fresh seasonal produce is available at all our 20 distribution locations. In fact, mark your calendars now to support National Farmers Market Week Aug. 5-11. Our SNAP outreach worker travels around the community to help neighbors receive benefits to purchase from MoCo businesses.
On behalf of the whole Manna team, I want to thank you for making this kind of service possible no matter what the season. I hope you won't take a vacation from staying involved! Whether by giving online, shopping at a farmers market, or participating in our food drive later in the summer, we can't end hunger without you this month and all summer long.

On Saturday June 30, nearly one hundred
college baseball players who have come from across the country to play summer baseball in Montgomery County collected 9,499 pounds of food at twelve Giant Food stores across Montgomery County for the Manna Food Center. The Gaithersburg Giant upset the perennial champion Rockville Express to win the Ninth Annual Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League's Feed the Hungry Challenge by collecting an individual team record 3,205 pounds of food. Players from the Bethesda Big Train and Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts also collected food on Saturday. Despite wilting heat, the league total was the highest in the nine years of the challenge as three of the four teams recorded dramatic increases over previous years. In the nine years of the competition, the college players have collected 53,171 pounds of food - nearly 27 tons of food for Montgomery County's neighbors in need.
Ripken League Co-Founder Bruce Adams, who initiated the Feed the Hungry Challenge in 2010, said: "Seeing these college ballplayers who have come here from all across the country pitch in to serve our Montgomery County neighbors in need - especially in this incredible heat - reminds us of the good there is in the world when we all work together."

In the month of June, Manna partnered with Impact Silver Spring and Interfaith Works to bring our Pop-Up Pantries Program to East County residents. In rain or shine, the fully stocked pantries inside the colorfully refurbished Manny jostled and squeezed its way through narrow roads, sharp turns, and sudden stops to bring much needed food to religious centers in East County.
We provided food for Liberty Grove United Methodist Church, The Lutheran Church at St. Andrews, The People's Community Baptist Church, and Colesville Presbyterian Church.
The Pop-Up Pantry aims to distribute a variety of fresh fruit and veggies, eggs, and potatoes to cater towards the community that is in need of the food - all in a "pop-up" style.
Whether our turnout was 20 or 62, the faces of young and old alike lit up when seeing the overflowing (quite literally), colorful racks of food in a grocery store style layout, all fit in an old school bus! After they visited the bus, many people also helped Arts on the Block by taking a survey on a local mural being painted in the near future.
To welcome the guests and to provide an example of how the fresh produce could be made, Jaimie made roasted cauliflower. A little bit of paprika, garlic powder, and salt was all it took to woo the crowds and encourage people to take the cauliflower.

ing food and repacking Manny, we all left smiling, as the positive energy and excitem
ent from the community seeing this amazing and innovative bus lifted our spirits as well, even in the pouring rain. Manny will be tooting along to many more Pop-Up Pantries this summer, so we hope you keep a lookout for a colorful bus filled with fresh produce!

| Smart Sacks In School Pantry |

This past school year, Manna piloted a new program to implement school pantries in Montgomery County. Currently, the Smart Sacks weekend bag program provides a bag of shelf-stable food items to 2,860 students across 57 elementary schools during the school year to bridge the weekend meal gap. While Smart Sacks provides consistent weekend food support, there is still a great need for fresh produce and additional food assistance among many hungry families in Montgomery County.
Making more food available inside the school is one way Manna meets this need. Our innovative new pilot school pantry at Highland Elementary School started this past school year. Manna supplied Linkages to Learning staff at Highland Elementary with additional food items to supplement their existing pantry. At the pantry, families are able to pick up fresh produce (like apples, oranges, cabbages, and sweet potatoes) and shelf-stable food (such as oatmeal, pasta, cereal, cooking oil, and condiments).
Manna delivers the food items to Highland ES and the school staff and volunteers take charge in setting up the pantry. Parents were able to conveniently visit the school pantry on regularly scheduled days during the morning hours after they dropped their children off at school.
The pantry model allows families to receive more food and a wider variety of food items to select the food that works best for their family. Manna seeks to expand school pantries to additional schools in Montgomery County, to reduce food insecurity while preserving the dignity and respect for our families.

Volunteers help, Mon-Fri from 9am-3pm, pack and sort food, bag produce and meat, assist clients to their car, and take in food donations.
Must be 17 years of age of older. This opportunity is approved for SSL hours.

Client Services Representative
Help log referrals by phone, fax, and email in to our database. Volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of 6 months.
English/Spanish bi-lingual skills are required.

Satellite Distribution Centers
Volunteers help Tuesdays at Glenmont United Methodist Church, Wednesdays at Clifton Park Baptist Church (formerly Long Branch Satellite) from 3pm-7pm, and Fridays at
