IMPORTANT DATES

I thought I would check in to see how everyone is doing with the assigned Summer list.  For a
brief reminder, I have re-posted it below.
  1. Eat a Smores - the hot, sticky treat has been known to improve stickhandling abilities
  2. Jump into a cold body of water - this should be easy to find in these parts.  It is a proven method to increase your heart rate, and exiting the water will surely improve foot speed
  3. Laugh with a teammate - This will be sure to improve core strength and develop strong abs
  4. Catch a firefly - This will work on eye/hand coordination while teaching you to keep your head up
  5. Hug your mom - This does not have to be limited to Mother's Day, and the gesture will get a guaranteed lift to practice and maybe even a Slushie on those hard days.

Time is running out to complete the list because the Fall Season is fast approaching.  With that in mind, we thought it would be helpful to post some important upcoming dates in August;

August 9th - Early Bird Deadline for Fall Registration
August 11th - Blue & Gold Clinics begin for Mites
August 12th - Last Summer Skate
August 15th - Girls & Midget Tryouts
August 18th - Blue & Gold Clinics begin for all other age groups
August 24th - Mites Tryouts
August 25th - Last Sizing Day (10am - 3pm at All Seasons - Remember, even if you are not sure if you are joining us this Fall, it is better to get sized and have us delete your info rather than wait and be late for apparel and jerseys)
August 26 th - Sabre Welcome Back BBQ - Come join the fun and be eligible to win some exciting prizes

It is going to be an exciting and busy August, we hope to see you all soon.

Tony's Goalie Tips
Tip #11 --  Right Around the Corner

Hello Goalies!

Hope you have been enjoying the summer and spending time with your family. Tryouts are less than a month away. If you have not been on the ice yet then it is time to sharpen your skates and head to your local ice rink. Many elite players spend their whole summer training off ice in the gym looking to gain physical strength in certain areas. By the end of July and early August, they are back on the ice and working on the basics and little details. The most skillful and talented players learn to master the basics. This doesn't mean they move onto a tougher or more complex type of practice. The only thing that increases is the pace of their practice and their attention to detail. If a goalie keeps forgetting to lead with his stick on a simple "V" drill, then we do not want to increase the speed until it is corrected.

Once all the details are in line, then we increase the intensity and pace of the drill but only if the details are accomplished. We as goalies compete with our feet. It is our job to beat the play and be set before the shot comes. It all depends on your footwork and getting from point A to B in a controlled manner with all the little details in mind. For example, eyes move first, pivot shoulders and hips to the shooting lane, push and set into the shooting lane before the shot approaches, manage your depth, track puck and select save in order to control the shot with no second opportunities. Those are the little details in the goalie world. It can take years trying to master one of those details but if you really want to improve then you have to put in the work. It is time to get back on the ice and work on the little things in your game that make a BIG difference.

COACHES CORNER -- BY MIKE MCGINNIS

Coaches Corner: "Concussions and Baseline Impact Testing"

One of our top priorities as the Sabre organization is player safety and concussion awareness/education. Concussion research and awareness has become more relevant and prevalent in all of sports. It is one of the hardest injuries to properly diagnose and treat without expert intervention. This season we have partnered up with Pro Sports Spinal Rehab lead by Physician Dr. Randy Cybulski. Their offices provide numerous services in sports medicine from chiropractic care to physical therapy. We are excited about this partnership as they are certified to treat concussions and able to work with our skaters so they can recover properly with confidence and efficiency. You will find their contact information below.

As AHAI members each skater is able to take a base line impact test, free of charge for all Sabre skaters. This is highly encouraged for skaters, 10U and above. A baseline test is able to test an individual skater's brain under normal function so that when a skater does have a head injury they are able to test that same skater after the injury and compare the results to their baseline test. Skaters are encouraged to take a baseline test every season as these results are typically only good for 14 months; adolescent brains are constantly developing. We highly encourage you to call and set up an appointment. Pro Sports Spinal Rehab offers these baseline impact tests at their facilities.

As parents and coaches, safety is our number one concern and honestly we do not want to play doctor and have to make a judgement call if a player should skate or not after head impact injury. Our coaches are directed to error on the extreme side of caution and not put a skater on the ice if there is any doubt or concern. Again we are coaches, not doctors, and we now have a partnership to help treat our skaters if there is a concern.

Concussions are not easy to diagnose, and there is no magic test to confirm if one is concussed. Only a certified medical expert can properly diagnose and treat a concussion. Getting a concussion is not the main area of concern as one will heal from a concussion with time. The major concern with concussions, is getting a second concussion when the brain has not fully healed. This is why it is important to fully recover before returning to the ice while following proper Return to Play protocols outlined by a medical professional. Many times players may "feel fine" but are not fully recovered from a concussion and by working with Pro Sports Spinal Rehab and having a baseline test done can help alleviate any doubt and help in a proper recovery.
