ERS scales back in wake of mass employee exodus
Sept. 30 marks the day many employees of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (ERS) were due to check in at their new location in Kansas City, yet only a fraction will continue with the department's economic research arm. As a result of the need to hire new employees, several reports will also be delayed or halted until further notice.

New undergrad degree pairs computer, animal sciences
The Illinois Board of Higher Education in September approved a new undergraduate degree that combines computer sciences and animal sciences at the University of Illinois, according to an announcement from the university, which noted that incoming freshmen can enroll in the program, known as CS + Animal Sciences, starting in the fall of 2021.

Dairy FARM program announces version 4.0 changes
The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), with support from Dairy Management Inc., announced Sept. 26 updates to animal care standards under the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Animal Care program after a rigorous 16-month stakeholder review.

Cargill launches new animal, human health unit
Cargill announced this week to its employees "a transformation" in its Animal Nutrition enterprise that it says will make it "more customer-centric and capture greater opportunity for growth in a more cost-competitive way."
The company said it is specifically adding "health" to the name of the division to become Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health "because of the importance it plays in our customers' and consumers' expectations."

the 37th ADSA Discover Conference, Natural Bioactives in Dairy Production: Science, Functions and the Future. The conference will be held October 28-31, 2019 at the Eaglewood Resort and Spa in Itasca, IL.
The dairy industry is under economic and societal pressure to increase efficiency while simultaneously reducing environmental impact and ensuring animal well-being. This conference will focus on the latest developments in understanding how specific feeds or compounds alter animal performance through immune stimulation, microbial modification, metabolic regulation, and inflammation reduction.
Conference topics include:

- Adaptive immunity
- Redox potential and cellular stress
- Research methodology and application
