Casas de Luz Newsletter November 2019
Happy November, and happy month of giving thanks! While four families have received new homes this month, many more have lost them due to the fires spreading across Baja California. Find out what we've done this month and what you can do during the month of November to get more involved!
October Builds
October 5, 6
Carlsbad Trailblazers
2 homes in one weekend! It was a tight build site, especially for a double build, but the team persevered and were able to welcome home the Morales Vicente and Ramírez Tules families!
October 19, 20
Shannon's Birthday Build!
For her birthday wish, Shannon wanted to build a home for a family. The team welcomed home the Pedraza family, active volunteers at our Faro de Luz community center.
October 26, 27
Chalice UU
Just escaping the Santa Ana winds, the Chalice UU team built a 16 x 24 home in no time, welcoming home the Pérez Torres family at noon. The family finally has a place to stay after losing their father last year.
Donation Drives
Halloween Candy Drive
Got candy? We have just the place for all of your leftover candy! Participate in our annual project piñata, to fill the piñatas of our holiday parties and bringing sweets to Tijuana. Feel free to drop off any candy at our donation sheds or contact us for other drop off locations.
Holiday Toy Drive
Holiday Party Dates:
Cumbres: January 5, 2020
Faro de Luz: January 12, 2020

This year we will be celebrating King's Day as opposed to our traditional holiday parties. We need your help! We are looking for over 200 new or gently used toys to fill the stockings of kids in both of our community centers. Feel free to drop them off at the sheds or contact us for other locations. Thank you for bringing the holiday spirit to Tijuana!

Meet Israel, Janeth, Polet, and Yamileth! The Rivera Ruiz family are currently living with Janeth's mom and have wanted to build a little room to grow their family but haven't been able to. Israel works as a bus driver while Janeth stays at home to take care of the girls.
November 16, 17
We are currently looking for a family for this build who has been affected by the fires, stay tuned for our next newsletter to meet another Casas de Luz family!
Do you want to sponsor a build? Gather a group of friends, family, coworkers, and choose a date! We are filling up for 2020 but we always have space to build another home.
Featured Family Testimonial
November 2018
"The emotions that one feels is not comparable with anything. To see people who don't even know you work wish such passion and love to build something for your family is a beautiful feeling. I am so grateful to the entire team, may God bless their lives in the same way He blessed mine." - Rosa Ramirez
Despensas de Luz
Meet the Mundo Hernandez Family
Ángel works as a security guard and Aracely works in a factory while Maria stays home to take care of the kids and the house. Ángel is in his 6th year at primary school, Kenia is in her 4th, and Cristian is in his first year. Angela and Fernando like to play outside together and with their older siblings when they get home from school. Ángel, Kenia, and Cristian like to do their homework when they get home and they enjoy playing with other community members at Faro de Luz.
Baja California Fires
Fire Season
For the past few weeks, the Santa Ana winds have sparked fires spreading across all of Baja California. Although none of our Casas de Luz homes have been affected, hundreds of families are now homeless after the fires have left their home and belongings as ash. It is unknown how many exact homes and lives have been lost as the numbers increase every day as the fires spread to different parts.

We have received several inquiries on how we can help the fire victims. We have the ability to build homes and support families in the process of rebuilding their lives. If you or a group of friends want to sponsor a build, let us know! Spread the word - we can be part of rebuilding Tijuana after the devastation of these fires. While we can build for those families who meet our requirements, we can't build for everyone! We CAN help in terms of replacing lost belongings, find out what is most needed below.
Donations
Donation Spotlight: Blankets

As the cold weather approaches and families are losing their homes, we are in greater need of items to keep families warm! You can help keep these families warm with donations of blankets and anything to keep them warm. We will be exploring those communities affected by the fires to further find how to best support these families.
Donation Sheds at St. James Catholic Church

Sheds are at the end of the parking lot of the church if coming from the North. If you are coming from the South, take Via de la Valle and drive towards the ocean. On Del Mar Downs Road, turn right and continue until the end of the road where you will turn left. Drive left up the hill and the sheds will be on your left! There is a rope protecting our sheds from being a dump zone, so feel free to drop off your  usable donations right there!   Please contact us so we know to expect it!
Newsletter in Spanish
To include our community in Tijuana, we are excited to announce a monthly newsletter in both an English and Spanish edition! Check out the newsletter in Spanish below, and share it with friends and family.
