ABBVIE DONATES $100 MILLION TO RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES
AbbVie ( Laura Schumacher and  Azita Saleki-Gerhardt) recently announced a donation of $100 million to Ronald McDonald House Charities. The donation will be used to build family-centered spaces and more than 600 new guest sleeping rooms in at least 26 states and at 32 Ronald McDonald Houses. This will allow for approximately 230,000 additional night stays for pediatric patients and their families each year, helping RMHC Chapters to meet increasing demand and serve more families.
 
"Our donation is grounded in the shared belief that families should have the necessary resources to care for a hospitalized child, along with the support to strengthen their well-being and resiliency during a challenging time," said Laura Schumacher, Executive Vice President, External Affairs, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, AbbVie. MACARTHUR FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY-LED SOLUTIONS IN CHICAGO
MacArthur Foundation (Julia Stasch) is investing more than $26 million to support organizations that foster economic opportunity and equity and increase peace and safety in Chicago. The community-driven organizations, collaborations, and initiatives are centered in neighborhoods that have experienced disinvestment, segregation, and isolation.

"A more peaceful city requires urgent attention to people and places that are most affected by violence. It also demands long-term investment in organizations and efforts that get at the root causes of violence, including racial and economic inequity, disinvestment, and isolation," MacArthur President Julia Stasch said. "We want to help local leaders, organizations, and networks across the city that are tackling both, with passion, persistence, creativity, and effectiveness." Read more...

TWO NEW BUILDINGS FOR MCDONALD'S IN CHICAGO 
DEMONSTRATE NEW DESIGN DIRECTION FOR THE FAST-FOOD CHAIN
Carol Ross Barney, President, Ross Barney Architects, and Gensler ( Nila Leiserowitz), were highlighted in a Metropolis article that featured Carol's design of the River North  McDonald's flagship restaurant and Gensler's design of the  new corporate headquarters for McDonald's in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood.  Both the new restaurant and corporate offices in the West Loop mark the beginning of a new chapter for the corporation.   Read more...

CHICAGO RANKS THIRD IN THE NATION FOR FAST GROWING BUSINESSES NAMED TO INC. 5000
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and World Business Chicago ( Andrea L. Zopp ) recently  announced that Chicago ranks third in the nation in the number of fast growing small businesses according to the annual Inc. 5000 list.

WSLS CELEBRATES NEW BUILDING WITH CEREMONIAL GROUND BREAKING
On Thursday, August 16, the Virginia-based TV station broke ground for a brand-new station in Roanoke, VA. Emily Barr, CEO of WSLS' parent company Graham Media said, "I am very excited. The first time I walked into the old building, which is, let's be honest, it's kind of past its useful life, I was looking and hoping that we could do this for you, so to get started and dig up the first mound of dirt -- it's really exciting." SCIENTISTS SEEK TO ADDRESS GLOBAL DISPARITIES IN BREAST CANCER MORTALITY, DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECTING WOMEN OF AFRICAN ANCESTRY
The first study of its kind applying modern genomics technology to DNA contributed by Sub-Saharan African women has shown they are more likely than women of other ancestries to develop and to die from triple-negative breast cancer. Dr. Funmi Olopade, Associate Dean for Global Health, University of Chicago, is an author of the the study.  Read more...

EQUITY LIFESTYLE PROPERTIES ADDS GLAMPING TO RV PARKS
Equity LifeStyle Properties ( Marguerite Nader) will now let you stay in a tepee or yurt for just $69 a night. The company created the brand Petite Retreats last year and added glamping sets to 15 of its parks across the United States.  The business has been booming and the revenue from Equity LifeStyle's RV parks rose 7.6 percent in the first half of the year. NACD'S DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER SERIES LUNCHEON FEATURING ILENE S. GORDON
What is the role of the board in leading and driving change to enhance long-term shareholder value?  At the National Association of Corporate Directors' (NACD's) distinguished speakers series on September 28, l earn from Ilene S. Gordon who was CEO and Chairman of Ingredion for almost nine years, and Executive Chairman until August 1, 2018. Ilene has been an agent of change her entire career, and shareholders have been greatly rewarded by her leadership.  She has been serving on boards for almost 25 years and will share her perspective on the changing role of board directors as valued advisors to the CEO for the ultimate benefit of the shareholders . ELAINE MAIMON CALLS ON COLLEGES TO STOP THE SNOBBERY IN NEW BOOK
Elaine Maimon, President, Governors State University, published her new book, Leading Academic Change: Vision, Strategy, Transformation (Stylus Publishing). In the book, Elaine implores campus leaders not to forget about the less pressing, but still paramount, issues in higher education today, such as improving pathways from community colleges to universities, reforming teaching and learning, and getting underrepresented students across the finish line.

"People ask me, how did you write this book while the budget crisis was going on?" says Elaine Maimon. "It became a necessity to write the book, because it kept my eyes on the big picture." Drawing on three decades as a senior administrator, she outlines - with "missionary zeal" - what she believes educators should do about those core problems. Read more...
LOYOLA SEEKING EARLY CAREER STUDENT MENTORS
The Baumhart Center at Loyola University Chicago (Jo Ann Rooney) is seeking nominations (including self-nominations) for early career professionals to serve as mentors to talented students who are pursuing career futures in social impact, social enterprise, and social responsibility. Mentors agree to attend a series of dinners over the course of one-year where they can participate in professional development conversations and where they share their experiences and early career wisdom with students. NEW ALBUM FEATURING CIVITAS ENSEMBLE RELEASED
The new album released on August 17, Alla Zingarese, features exhilarating music performed by Civitas ( Yuan-Qing Yu) and the Gipsy Way Ensemble. The project is the outgrowth of the enduring friendship between Civitas violinist Yuan-Qing Yu and Prague-based violinist Pavel Sporcl dating back to their student days. The Chicago Tribune found it "unique" and "exhilarating." Chicago on the Aisle called it "a trip through musical history . . . and a venture into new musical territory with surprises aplenty." Alla Zingarese was also chosen as "Album of the Week" by two California radio stations.
