Higher GAMMIS Clinical Viewer Usage = Better Care

GAMMIS users retrieved 19,120 documents from GaHIN in the one-year period between October 2018 and September 2019 – over 10 times more than the 1,823 documents retrieved during the same period in the previous year.                                                                             Providing better access to more comprehensive patient health information is at the heart of what we do at GaHIN. With the GaHIN clinical viewer integrated into the GAMMIS portal, even physician practices without an EHR can still access patient health information.   GAMMIS, which stands for Georgia Medicaid Management Information System, is a web portal operated by the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH). Medicaid providers can log into the portal to access claims and remittance information as well as see confirmation of Medical Assistance Plan member eligibility. GaHIN and DCH worked closely together to establish the clinical viewer capability within GAMMIS.   By using the clinical viewer in GAMMIS, providers who may not have an EHR can still view their patients’ electronic health information. Intermediary Program Awards $500,000 to GA Providers

GaHIN awarded a total of $500,000 to its members in 2019 to accelerate technology adoption and the electronic exchange of health information in Georgia. Since the Intermediary Program’s inception five years ago, 330 providers have received grants totaling $3.3 million. For 2019, 50 providers were on-boarded to GaHIN’s statewide HIE network.   Intermediaries are hospital-based and regional HIEs that have direct technical interoperable connections to GaHIN. The program is funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, with the Georgia Department of Community Health passing the funds through to GaHIN to develop and execute the program.   “We are so pleased to be able to help medical practices throughout Georgia improve the quality of care they deliver with these grants,” said Denise Hines, Executive Director of GaHIN. “Not only does having comprehensive patient information at the point of care improve care quality, it also helps to reduce costs.”

Dr. James Morrow Receives Prestigious Humanitarian Award

James R. (Jim) Morrow, MD, is the recipient of the Distinguished Humanitarian Physician Alumni Award from the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine. Dr. Morrow is President and CEO of Morrow Family Medicine and long-time member of GaHIN’s Board of Directors.   Dr. Morrow and his wife, Peggie, head The Forsyth BYOT Benefit , which contributes to local children and families who cannot afford the necessary resources to be successful under today's teaching methods. Public schools today heavily rely on technology (laptops, tablets, and phones) to teach children, and The Forsyth BYOT Benefit exists to make sure everyone has the technology needed to do well in school and to get the most out of their education.   "This is such an incredible honor," says Dr. Morrow. "To have my alma mater recognize the work that Peggie and I have been doing is very fulfilling. There is still a great deal of need in our area, so we plan to continue to do what we can for these deserving students."

Informing the Next Generation of HIT Professionals

Dr. Dennis White, past chair of the GAHIN Board and the President and CEO of Alliant Health Solutions, also teaches classes at Georgia State University. Dr. White recently invited some of the GaHIN team to provide the Health Analytics and Computer Information Systems students with insights on GaHIN’s products and services as well as health IT industry trends. “The experience was fulfilling and exciting. If Dr. White’s students are a reflection of the next wave of industry leaders, we’re in good hands,” said Shirelle King, GaHIN’s Marketing and Outreach Coordinator.
