A Message from the Coordinator of Safety and Security

Tim Cook addresses school safety and security measures for 2018-19.

With the 2018-19 school year underway, I believe it is important to introduce myself and highlight some of the new safety initiatives in place at Lake Park. My name is Tim Cook and I have been appointed to the newly created position of Coordinator of Safety and Security to specifically address districtwide security needs and to ensure the safety of all Lancer students and staff.

My background is in law enforcement and counseling, and I am the parent of two high school aged students. I fully understand the concerns of parents and entrust my own children's safety to the staff at their school. My responsibility at Lake Park is to protect our school community in a manner that allows staff to continue providing an excellent learning environment for students, despite the changing school landscape appearing in the media.

To facilitate the District's safety goals, additional personnel who are dedicated to safety and security have been employed this year at both campuses. The majority of these Safety Monitors have law enforcement backgrounds and all of them are committed to keeping Lake Park safe. These individuals wear easily identifiable uniforms and are visible in the vestibules, hallways, and throughout the school grounds. In addition to installing new physical security equipment, new procedures will be instituted specifically designed with security in mind.

Another focus of critical importance is ongoing safety training for students and staff. All employees participated in an active threat in-service on August 22 presented jointly by the Roselle Police Department and the School Resource Officers. During August 27-31, students participated in Safety Week and practiced drills and reviewed safety procedures in each of their classes. Most recently, both campuses started this week by conducting lockdown drills that involved locking doors and creating visual barriers into classrooms. Our Lancers have participated in these training opportunities with purpose and professionalism.

Hawaiian Homecoming Week

Join in the week of activities planned from September 22-29.

Lancer Nation is excited for Homecoming Week to kick off this weekend on Saturday , September 22 ! Join in the fun of this year's quadrennial Homecoming Parade, which steps off at 9:00 a.m. and showcases the Village of Roselle, the Downtown Roselle Business Merchants, Roselle Police and Roselle Fire.

View the Homecoming Parade route ! Parade spectators are encouraged to set-up along Main Street to view the Parade. However, Main Street will be closed to traffic ahead of the Parade for safety and organization.

Congratulations to the 2018 Homecoming Court! The coronation will take place next Friday during the pep rally, which will be streamed live at 1:15 p.m. so parents, family members, and Lancers for Life can join in on the fun! Students and families are encouraged to visit the Homecoming website for important information regarding Homecoming activities, spirit days, dance tickets and appropriate attire.

The dance will be held at West Campus on Saturday, September 29 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and will be sold in the student cafeteria at both campuses through Thursday only during Homecoming week. Students bringing a guest must complete a guest form and purchase tickets during the pre-sales. Tickets will not be sold on Friday, but will be available at the door for $25 for Lake Park students only. Students must have an ID to purchase at the door. Limos and party buses are discouraged.

Lancers Unite for a Day of Service

Saturday marks fourth annual event for Lancers to give back to the community.

Now in its fourth year, Lake Park's annual "Make a Difference Day" returns on Saturday, September 22 following the Homecoming parade. Hundreds of Lancers - both students and staff - are expected to be sporting a sea of navy and white at volunteer sites throughout the community. The goal is simply to involve as many students, teams, groups and clubs as possible in the community at the same time.

The event kicks off following the parade with service projects from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Transportation will be provided to and from all projects, which include activities such as visiting nursing homes, clean-up at local parks and nature centers, packing meals at Feed My Starving Children, and assembling care packages for cancer patients at Phil's Friends.

PSAT-NMSQT Testing for Juniors on October 10

East Campus will have a normal school day; non-attendance day for seniors.

On Wednesday, October 10 all juniors from the Class of 2020 will take the PSAT/NMSQT exam at Lake Park West Campus. On this date, senior students from the Class of 2019 will not attend school; however, East Campus students will have a normal school day.

This exam is a practice test in preparation for the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test); however, it's also the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students who receive excellent scores on this test have the opportunity to earn prestigious status as National Merit Scholars.

This is a required attendance day for all juniors and they must be present in order to receive a score. The College Board does not allow absent students to make up the PSAT/NMSQT.

On test day, students should arrive at 7:15 a.m. and bring a current photo ID, two #2 pencils and an approved calculator. Morning buses will follow their normal route times, and will return students home upon the completion of testing at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Students received an official PSAT/NMSQT student guide in their English classes. This resource provides testing strategies, a full practice test, and a list of approved calculators. Lancers interested in gaining additional practice should visit the Test Prep site on the district homepage. If you have any questions, contact your student's counselor at (630) 295-5341.

Lancer Nation Participates in Mock Election

East Campus to host League of Women Voters Candidates Forum on September 30.

Special thanks to the Lake Park social studies department, Civics in Action student volunteers, and the League of Women Voters of Roselle/Bloomingdale for helping to conduct an all-school mock election during lunch periods on Tuesday, September 18 .

Over 650 Lancers cast votes for the following offices: Governor and Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Comptroller, Treasurer, and Representative in Congress for the 8th Congressional District. The votes have been tallied and the following winners were declared: JB Pritzker for Governor, Kwame Raoul for Attorney General, Jesse White for Secretary of State, Susana Mendoza for Comptroller, Michael Frerichs for Treasurer, and Raja Krishnamoothi for 8th District Representative.

The League of Women Voters of Roselle/Bloomingdale will sponsor a Candidates Forum in the East Campus Dice Auditorium on Sunday, September 30 at 1:00 p.m. Candidates running in the contested Illinois State Senate District 23, Illinois House District 45, DuPage County Board District 1 and District 6 have been invited to attend.

The event is an opportunity for voters to meet, ask questions and learn more about the credentials and platforms of the candidates. Doors will open at 1:00 p.m. for a "meet and greet" with the candidates, followed by the impartially moderated candidates' forum with questions submitted by the audience and the League.

Willkommen to German Foreign Exchange Students

International guests scheduled to visit Lake Park until October 5.

Willkommen to 18 students, two teacher chaperones and a principal who arrived in the U.S. this week from Germany! Lake Park High School families welcomed and are hosting the international guests from Helene-Lange Gymnasium in Hamburg, Germany from Sunday, September 16 through Friday, October 5 .

The exchange includes German students staying with their American counterparts who are enrolled in in the World Language curriculum. They are attending classes at Lake Park and participating in school activities as well as taking field trips to Chicago attractions.

Lancers will complete the exchange by traveling to Hamburg in June 2019.

Join the Lake Park Educational Foundation for special bleacher seating in the Alumni End Zone during the Homecoming game on Friday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. at West Campus.

All Lake Park alumni, current staff, retired staff and their families are invited to cheer on the 2018 Lancers as they take on Glenbard North High School in the new DuKane Conference.

Graduating classes from years ending in "8" or "3" (1968, 1973, 1978, 1983 and so on) will be recognized. Reservations are not required, but you must purchase a ticket for the football game to join in the alumni section.

In addition to the Homecoming parade and game, a number of class reunions are upcoming. The classes of 1968, 1978, and 1988 are planning reunions in the next month. For information about those reunions, visit the Alumni website .

There's No Such Thing as a Man's Job

Lake Park West Campus proudly co-sponsors a special career exploration series for women.

Lake Park High School is proud to partner with the DuPage County Workforce Development Division to host the 3rd annual Breaking Boundaries event on Wednesday, October 3 at West Campus.

Join us for this special initiative that provides young women an opportunity to explore high-paying, in-demand technology and trade careers. Meet female physicists, engineers, IT professionals, welders, sheet metal workers, auto mechanics, electricians and business owners working in industries building and designing the future.

Kayleen McCabe, host of the cable television program "Rescue Renovation," will be the featured guest speaker. A contractor and renovation expert, McCabe is an ardent advocate of the value of trade careers and a supporter of women entering nontraditional fields.
