Hershey Community Center Capital Campaign Kicks Off with Leadership Support from The Hershey Company
|
The new Hershey Community Center is one step closer to reality thanks to The Hershey Company’s generous commitment of $1,000,000.
The pledge was announced by The Hershey Company CEO, Michele Buck, at a special fundraising event, Adult Swim: Last Call, held inside the empty outdoor pool at the recreation center.
Buck serves as the honorary chairperson for the five-million-dollar capital campaign which kicked off with approximately 170 supporters in attendance at the event.

Meeting to be Held on the Operational Analysis for the New Hershey Community Center
|
The Department of Parks and Recreation has been working with Ballard King Associates to develop an business plan for the new Hershey Community Center. The plan will be presented at a public meeting on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. at the Derry Township Municipal Complex, 600 Clearwater Road.
All interested parties are invited to attend.
The presentation of the Design Development Phase of the Community Center Project has been rescheduled for the regularly scheduled Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, October 9, 2018. The design team is finalizing the design and cost estimates for the project.

PPL Electric Utilities to Rebuild Power Lines
|
PPL Electric Utilities has started a project that will rebuild power lines from their South Hershey Substation along Forest Avenue east along Homestead Road to their Hershey Substation.
The project is necessary to improve electric service and is expected to continue through February 2019.
The pole structures, pictured on the left, will vary in height and arm configuration.

First Session of Hershey All Things Diversity Series Empowers Women and Girls
|
“Be Empowered by Those Who Have Been Empowered.”
Hershey All Things Diversity opened the 2018-2019 series to a full house with a message from Sharice Johnson, Senior Division, Student Programs Leader, Milton Hershey School.
Johnson defined what being an empowered woman means to her. She said, “An empowered woman is someone who knows her strengths and isn’t afraid to embrace them. To be empowered means to be in control of your life and aware of your capabilities to take on your biggest dreams.”
She presented four methods for women to become empowered. The first method is Purpose. She discussed the importance of developing skills and obtaining an education. She encourages women to “Find your spark.” She explained, “It is a process and takes time, but what you are passionate about is your spark. Your spark gives you energy, joy, and purpose.” Johnson’s spark is mentoring. She said, “I love the vision and the purpose of Milton Hershey School.”

Stauffer's Church Road to Close
|
Stauffer's Church Road will be closed to traffic beginning Monday, September 24 for approximately four weeks. The road will be closed for the replacement of a bridge culvert.
Detours will be clearly marked during the closure.

Eligible Residents Can Qualify for the Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program
|
The Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older, and people with disabilities age 18 and older.
The program is one of five supported by the Pennsylvania Lottery. Since the program’s 1971 inception, older and disabled adults have received more than $6.7 billion in property tax and rent relief. The rebate program also receives funding from slots gaming.
The application deadline is December 31, 2018.

Monday, September 24, 3:00 - 7:00 p.m., at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue.
Please come to donate a pint of blood. No appointment is necessary. Bring ID with you and eat within four hours prior to donating.
Donors will receive a Papa John's buy one large pizza, get one large pizza and 2-liter Pepsi product free certificate, and two free admission vouchers to a Harrisburg Comedy Zone Show!

The event will be held on Saturday, October 6 from 8:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Public Works facility, 650 Clearwater Road, Hershey. There is a limit of two bags/boxes per household. This event is for Derry Township residents only.

Dr. Davidson Returns for Encore Presentation on Pennsylvania Health Care Solutions
|
The Hershey Indivisible Team will again host Dr. Bill Davidson of Health Care For All PA in an encore presentation and viewing of a documentary titled
Fix It Health Care at the Tipping Point, on Saturday, September 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue.
Dr. Davidson is one of the original authors of a program which could save billions of dollars in total health care costs. If you are eager for legislation that protects citizens from the uncertainty of health-related debt, check out PA House Bill 1688.

Hershey Symphony Orchestra Announces 50th Season
|
The Hershey Symphony opens its 50th season on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. at the Hershey Theatre with "A Tribute to John Williams - Part 2".
The concert brings a second helping of possibly the world’s best known and beloved composer, John Williams. The Symphony’s 2016 Williams tribute concert was so well received that the Orchestra was compelled to do this sequel featuring more of his 100+ film themes.
Audience members will relive the magic of
Harry Potter, the emotions of
E.T., the deep feelings of
Saving Private Ryan, the suspense of
Jaws and, of course, the excitement of
Star Wars. Carol Jantsch, principal tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra, will be featured on John Williams’ Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra. Special guest conductor for this concert will be Gregory Woodbridge.

Annual Rob Hamilton Memorial Golf Tournament benefitting the Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute will be held Friday, October 5 at the Hershey Country Club West Course and Picard Grand Pavilion.
The Rob Hamilton Memorial Golf Tournament is an enjoyable day of golf followed by a wonderful evening program, which includes an awards dinner and fabulous silent auction.
The team scramble golf tournament is played on the beautiful and historic Hershey Country Club West Course. Dinner and the evening program will be held in the elegant Picard Grand Pavilion. The silent auction features an exciting variety of items such as vacation packages, works of art, fashion accessories, sports memorabilia, and much more. Janelle Stelson, WGAL News 8 anchor, will once again host the event.

Introduction to Islam and Hinduism to be Presented at Next Derry Seniors Meeting
|
"Comparative Religion: Jesus, Mohammad and Krishna" will be presented at the next Derry Seniors gathering set for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 16. The program will be held in room 7 on the lower level at Presbyterian Church, 248 East Derry Road, Hershey.
Dr. Matthew Sayers, Associate Professor of Religion at Lebanon Valley College, will introduce the religious traditions associated with Islam and Hinduism belief, ritual key figures, community, history, and morality. He'll draw on the audience's understanding of Christianity to explain similarities and differences in the two traditions and across religions more generally. Questions from the audience are welcome.
Following devotions and the program, lunch is available in Fellowship Hall for $3 per person. A pharmacist will be on hand to answer questions regarding medications.

Derry Seniors offer adults 55 and older an opportunity to gather, socialize, and learn about people and places within the community. The group is affiliated with Derry Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
No reservations are needed, and no admission will be charged. Handicapped parking and an elevator are available.
