Message from the City Manager

Dear Bainbridge Islanders,

 

I extend my sincere gratitude for the past six years, which have been filled with
personal and professional growth. I will look back with fond memories of many friendly faces, challenges overcome, and accomplished goals. I will carry with me the friendships that I have been privileged to enjoy.

My hope for Bainbridge Island is that the community will embrace the opportunity to participate in local government to the fullest extent and through that participation, the local government will continue to evolve and build trust.

Connecting Bainbridge: SAFE Mobility Levy

Please join us for the SAFE Mobility Levy workshop on Saturday morning at Seabold Hall. This is an opportunity to learn more about the $15 million levy for improvement projects (shoulders, sidewalks, paths, trails with focus on safe routes to schools) that is designed to provide safe access for everyone on the Island- from pedestrians and wheelchair users to bicyclists and cars.
 
In July, the City Council approved Resolution 2018-21 that explains how the funds raised by the ballot measure will be used (if approved) and how the public will be involved in making decisions on specific projects. The Resolution states that 45% of the funding will be used for shoulder improvements, 30% will be used for safe routes to schools and trails, 15% would be for pedestrian improvements in the Winslow core and 10% would be set aside for additional non-motorized opportunities.
 
If approved by voters, the levy lid lift will raise $15 million over seven years to pay for the non-motorized transportation projects. The estimated increase to the property tax rate is 28 centers per $1,000 of assessed property value. The owner of a $660,000 home (median home value on Bainbridge Island) would pay an additional $185 in property taxes per year during a seven-year period.
 
The workshop at Seabold Hall begins at 10 a.m. Please check the SAFE Mobility Levy webpage for additional outreach plans. If you cannot attend the workshop on September 22, the final workshop is scheduled for Thursday, October 11 at Island Center Hall from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Three Days of Preparedness Returns  

Please join us for the fourth annual Three Days of Preparedness to learn more about how to be prepared when disaster strikes.
 
The event will begin on Wednesday, September 26 with Film Night at Bainbridge Cinemas featuring The Geological Formation of Bainbridge Island: Parts 1, 2 and 3 . Doors open for the first showing at 5:30 p.m. with the film starting at 6 p.m. Doors open for the second showing at 6:30 p.m. with the film beginning at 7 p.m. After each showing of the film, community members will have the opportunity to ask questions of Gregory Geehan, a geologist and narrator of the film. The event is free, but tickets are necessary and can be reserved on Eventbrite.

The Three Days of Preparedness continues Saturday, September 29 with a Preparedness Expo at City Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will include information booths and workshops. New this year - the Big Shaker! The Expo will feature a mobile earthquake simulator for people to experience what can happen inside your home when there's an earthquake.
 
On Sunday, September 30, the Three Days of Preparedness will wrap-up with the Emergency Hubs Demonstration from 2 to 4 p.m. at Island Church, located at 9624 Sportsman Club Rd. Drop by anytime during the two-hour period to learn more about our system of neighborhood gathering sites for emergencies.
 
WSF Welcomes Newest Vessel, Suquamish, with Community Celebration

Join Washington State Ferries for a community celebration on Saturday as they welcome the newest vessel, Suquamish, to the fleet! The event will be held at the Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility and is an open house, so you can stop by any time from 10 a.m.  - 4 p.m. for vessel tours, live music, kids' activities and free refreshments. Join BIPD for Coffee with a Cop
  
You're invited to join officers from the Bainbridge Island Police Department for Coffee with a Cop on Wednesday, October 3rd at McDonald's, located at 501 High School Road.
 
Coffee with a Cop is an opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department's work in your neighborhood.
