THE "S" STANDS FOR........

The 'S' Stands For . . . Support

Support the skater.
Support the team.
Support the coach.
Support the referees.
Support hockey.

Help support Sabres!

As spectators and parents of skaters, we want to continue to support our club in every way to help cultivate the best environment for our players to develop, compete, and enjoy the game. Sabres has become an extension of our families as youth hockey develops a fraternal bond with all of those on the ice and in the stands. As parents and spectators, we display passion, energy and love in watching our children play the game. We must remind ourselves that our support and actions in the stands is strong and influential. This season, we are asking you to help us improve that support in a stands to create the best environment for our skaters. Each month in the newsletter we will cover a different aspect of this support in the stands as the 'S' in Sabres stands for many things.

Every coach will be highlighting key focuses that we want spectators and parents to commit to early in
the season to really set the standard. Coaches will be covering the following expectations:

1. Do not coach from the stands. Many times we see parents yelling and giving direction to skaters
from the bleachers. This can be very distracting and counterproductive for skaters.
2. Do not make comments towards the referees. Yes, refs may miss calls from
time to time, but players miss passes and shots all the same and we miss things too as coaches. There is no reason for any parent or spectator to address a referee. They are there to do their job and we should respect that.

3. Always stay positive. All in all, we are all there to create a fun environment for skaters to compete and learn in. Many times we find parents and spectators getting upset for any number of reasons and feeling it is necessary to express those feeling. Please, always stay positive!

We are off to a great start to the season and we want to continue to set the standard of being a great club for our skaters. You will find new spectator signs at our rinks highlighting expectations for us to support developing better skaters, and better people. We thank you for your continued support and the
positive energy that you bring to the ice and stands every day.

Support the skater. Support the team. Support the coach. Support the referees. Support hockey. Help support Sabres!

TONY'S GOALIE TIPS

Tip #12 Failure Leads to Success

Hello Goalies!

I hope everyone is excited to be back in school and ready for the hockey season to begin! With the start of a new season comes a lot of challenges which include failure. With failure we learn to make adjustments to the level of play, adjustments to the new coaching style, and adjustments to our game. It is going to take time and patience in order to fail correctly. Failure of not making the team you desired. Failure of not performing a skill correctly. Failure of not giving your best effort. There will be a lot of missed passes and shots off the glass during the first month. Goalies not sealing their posts and loose rebounds. Lots of failure will be in store for many of you not only as goalies but for players and coaches as well. Failure teaches greater lessons than success. We are always taught to do things the correct way and never praised when we fail. Failure is the most powerful source of understanding how things work. It leads to renewal, survival, and reinvention. By failing and staying persistent, you learn of finding new ideas and techniques in order to succeed through failure. Everyone is going to fail at something and we as friends, family, and teammates need to be there in those moments to help grow together through our own experiences of failure. Failure breeds success and if you are not failing and challenging yourself, you are not expanding yourself as an individual. Trying new things will always start with failure or misunderstanding but with time and persistence success is created through satisfaction and confidence.

COACHES CORNER -- BY MIKE MCGINNIS

Coaches Corner: TED Talks

"Idea's Worth Sharing" is the motto of TED talks (Technology, Entertainment, and Design), a media organization dedicated to producing influential online videos for free distribution covering a vast variety of topics. One of the main objectives of TED is to provoke creativity and expand the thought process while bridging various topics. Several overlapping topics are covered in these TED talks; sports, coaching, and leadership.

Recently a fellow coaching friend of mine forwarded me an article titled " 9 TED Talks" for coaches. The link is through a soccer coaching website, but all the Talks are essential for any coach, player, or parent in any sport at any age.

These videos are great motivators with a diversity of perspectives highlighting the reasons and purpose of why we coach and compete. Feel free to spend some time reviewing any or all of these videos as they will expand your own thinking and perspective on coaching. Many of the  topics covered are fundamental elements that we already follow, but these Talks refresh and remind us  of our role on a team and in sports. Feel free to also go to the TED Talk main web page for all their  videos over the years covering just about any topic.
