FALL KIDS' PROGRAMS

Our Sunday morning program theme this year is All Together In the Ark. Our weekly Bible Study will have a running theme of valuing our individual talents and abilities and seeing ourselves and each other the way God sees us: as unique, valuable, and capable of great things!  At 9:30AM Action Pack will take a service-oriented approach to Bible Study and will focus on living our God's Word. At 10:30AM our Sunday School will take a more traditional study-approach to our theme. Each week two different lessons will be presented in the two different hours. That way EverKids can attend at 9:30 and 10:30 without experiencing a repeated lesson. We are still looking for Sunday morning teachers! If you are able to donate time in this way, please either contact Sarah Sailor or Pastor Deb.

Our Wednesday Feed My Sheep program is a child-oriented community mission. At 4PM every Wednesday, we will pray together and prepare a simple meal for members of the congregation and community. Dinner is served at 5PM, and the EverKids will eat with the church family. At 5:30PM, Pastor Deb will lead the adults in a discussion group upstairs, and the EverKids will have a devotional and game time downstairs. The program will end at 6PM.

SOCIAL MEDIA TASK FORCE
We Need Your Help!

UMCE's Church Council has commissioned a Social Media Task Force to examine and make concrete recommendations on how we may improve  (1) our outreach to the foothills community to tell them about our great church family, and  (2) our "inreach" to better communicate and connect with our past, present and future church family.

This may take the form of updating our UMCE website and online social media presence (Facebook, etc.), streaming or posting online sermons or parts of Sunday and other special services, establishing a dedicated audio and video broadcast to Fellowship Hall to allow for overflow at highly attended services (such as funerals) and other uses such as family Movie Night.

If you have experience or knowledge in design, marketing or technical  areas needed for this task force and would like to be part of its work, please contact Bill Graf by phone 303-246-8330 or email [email protected] .

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

Ministry Jottings:  People Think Failure is Avoidable - It's Not

"Then Jesus asked them, "Young men, haven't you caught anything?" "Not a thing," they answered." He said to them, "Throw your net out on the right side of the boat, and you will catch some." - John 21 5-6

A woman and her grandmother, a very forgiving and religious soul, were sitting on their porch discussing a member of the family. "He's just no good," the young woman said. "He's completely untrustworthy, not to mention lazy."

"Yes, he's bad," the grandmother said as she rocked back and forth in her rocker, "but Jesus loves him." "I'm not so sure of that," the younger women persisted. "Oh, yes," assured the elder lady, "Jesus loves him." She rocked thought for a few more minutes and then added, "Of course, Jesus doesn't know him like we do."

You've heard the saying "To err is human, to forgive divine." Alexander Pope in writing that was paraphrasing a saying common 2,000 years ago, during the time of the Romans & Jesus. If you're a human being you are going to make mistakes.

John Maxwell picks this up and gives us the Rules for Being Human
Rule #1     You will learn lessons.
Rule #2     There are no mistakes - only lessons.
Rule #3     A lesson is repeated until it is learned.
Rule #4     If you don't learn the easy lesson, they get harder {Pain is one way the universe gets your attention}.
Rule #5     You'll know you've learned a lesson when your actions change.

As Christians, we look to both the Old and the New Testament to learn how to move forward from mistakes, from failure. The disciples, right after Jesus' death, were discouraged and went back to their fishing, and even then couldn't catch anything. The resurrected Jesus appeared to them. They didn't recognize him at first as he was on the shore and they were out in their boat. He encouraged them to try a different approach, to listen to his guidance, and to keep on persisting. His same message comes to us in our lives as disciples today.

This theme continues in Sunday's message -- "Failing Forward", part of our series on Life Lessons from Proverbs. I hope you can be with us.

In Christ's grace,
Pastor Deb

ADULT EDUCATION

Month of September:
Social Principles of the United Methodist Church
In the month of September, we will explore three of The Social Principles of the United Methodist Church, which are adopted every four years and are contained in the Book of Discipline. They connect the United Methodist Church as we express our faith in collaborative practice and our aspirations for the common good in our public policies and personal commitments. Through them, we seek to love God with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength and to desire for our neighbors what we desire for ourselves.

Sunday, September 23 from 9:30-10:20 am
Social Principles of the United Methodist Church:
Introduction and The Natural World
Facilitator: Katie Zapotoczny
According to the introduction to the United Methodist Social Principles, the Principles are "an expression of the common ground we share, reflecting our priorities and helping us learn about and advocate for vulnerable peoples and a vulnerable planet." Every four years, delegates to the UMC General Conference revisit the Social Principles, making changes that reflect new or revised positions of the church. Please join us for a brief overview of the Social Principles adopted at the 2016 General Conference and a discussion and dialogue about The Natural World, the Social Principle that addresses how we as a church and as individuals can care for and be in relationship with God's creation.

Sunday, September 30 from 9:30-10:20 am
Social Principles of the United Methodist Church:
The Social Community
Facilitator: Dr. Lorna Idol
In this session, we will explore issues raised by the Social Principles as they pertain to our social communities. We will explore four themes: privileges, rights, human dignity and responsibility as we examine Scriptures and then examine some current news stories to determine how Social Principles are reflected in the news, as well as the impact the news has upon our children and youth, as well as upon ourselves.
