Mollers named 2018 Peacemakers by EPF
by Betsy Davidson & Chuck Wolterink
Episcopal Peace Fellowship

The Episcopal Peace Fellowship is honoring its first EPF Peace Award recipients, Sharon and Pete Moller. The recipients have resided in Traverse City since 2011. Both are members of the Grace Church chapter of the EPF as well as the Veterans for Peace, Chapter 50. Pete was raised in a family where the children were taught to think globally from a Christian perspective. Both of his parents were very active in peace work during his upbringing. Pete and Sharon had two daughters, and have two grandsons.

Pete served in the Peace Corps in Peru from 1965-1967, working for the forest service.

In 1968, Pete's brother was killed while serving in Viet Nam.

Sharon and Pete were married in 1971. Shortly after marriage, they began preparing for a mission assignment in Latin America. They served in Chile for three years and two months, from 1972- 1975. Pete was teaching in a boy's agricultural school. Sharon was active in a number of both church and local groups, making community connections. In 1973, a military coup overthrew the elected leader, Salvador Allende, who was replaced by the dictator, Augusto Pinochet. Sharon and Pete both describe the experience as life altering.

After being in Latin America, Sharon and Pete resided in Leadville, Colorado for about 35 years. While there they worked in different peace groups and on different projects. They went on a two week peace outreach to Cuba during that time. During their last five years there, they became involved with the Episcopal Peace Fellowship.

Both Sharon and Pete describe their trip to Vietnam in 2013 as one of their most meaningful experiences. They relate that to how forgiving the Vietnamese people are of Americans, in spite of the continued hardships they endure because of our war with them.

Pete and Sharon both say what helps them continue to work for peace is that it gives meaning to their lives. They support each other in this effort. They believe that peace is a process, and not an end in itself.

REMEMBER - UNITY SERVICE NEXT WEEKEND
NO SAT. 5PM OR SUN. 8A SERVICES

Ministry Fair during Unity Service
Sun., Sept. 30 at 10am
Lunch and fun to follow!
Unity Service on September 30th! A time for folks to gather and worship together as Grace Episcopal Church in one service. There are folks we have not seen because they attend another service, folks whom we have never met because they attend one of the other services. This service will be a bit different than usual. The sanctuary will be filled with the sights of our ministries here at Grace. During the sermon time we will have the opportunity to move around and learn about the various ways we can engage our gifts and skills with the opportunities for service at Grace. A Ministry Fair allows us to explore. No need to sign up for a lifetime. I encourage folks to try something new each year or two. We often need to rest from ministries that we have been doing for years as a way to allow the Holy Spirit to inspire us to move in different directions and for the Holy Spirit to move through the ministries in new and exciting ways. This is a day to explore, question, discern and to dream. During lunch you will have an opportunity to gather with friends, meet others, talk about what excites you and learn from others what excites them, laugh together, and eat good food. Join us for this exciting worship service and time to break bread together.

Social Media Sunday on Sept. 30
In 2013, in an effort to inspire congregations and people of faith to share the Good News through modern communications channels, a group of Episcopalians came up with the very first Social Media Sunday - a day set aside to remind folks to share and engage in conversations of faith wherever they go, even Facebook! While you can (and should!) do these things every Sunday, I encourage you to think about posting photos, sermon quotes, quick videos, selfies (anything!) on whatever social media you may use. Add on "#SMS18" so that others from around the world can see your participation in the effort. There are a ton of resources being shared from around the Christian church for Social Media Sunday, like the special Facebook Group at groups/SMS15/. If you have any questions or would like to share your congregation's plans, contact Katie Forsyth, Diocesan Canon Missioner for Evangelism & Networking.

Turn in your Oleson's receipts to benefit the Grace Food Pantry!

Oleson's Community Share Program

Here's how it works:
  1. You shop at Oleson's for groceries (liquor sales do not qualify for points)
  2. Turn in your receipts to the church.  Look for the envelope on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, and place your receipts inside it.
  3. We submit receipts back to Oleson's
  4. We are granted cash rewards for the food pantry ($1 spent on groceries = 1 cent in Community Share points)

For every $5000 in receipts we submit, we receive $50 in cash for our food pantry.  Every little bit helps!

Thank you for participating!
