What do we do when our desire for belonging leads us toward division rather than unity? How do we learn to see that which makes us each distinct as a gift to our community rather than a barrier? We continue our September sermon series on Loneliness and Belonging by exploring Paul's first letter to the Corinthian Church (1 Corinthians 1:10-17). Melanie Marsh Baum's sermon is entitled "One in the Spirit".
Music Notes
Sunday's organ prelude features melodies from the Hebrew liturgies for the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, which had their conclusion this past Wednesday. "Blessed are you, Adonai. Your great name fills the universe with majestic might."
Children
K-5th will sing in worship on Sunday
, and then dismiss to Music and Ministry after the time for young disciples. 6th-12th grades will remain in worship. Reminder: If you complete a Worship Reflection and turn it in to Melanie, you'll receive a prize next week!

Angie Thomas's book The Hate U Give, a story of an African-American teenager who witnesses the killing of her best friend in a police shooting.
We will discuss themes race in America through the lens of youth culture, police brutality,
and the inner-city/suburban divide.

 Celebrating our Staff
Jonathan Moyer marked his ten-year anniversary as our music director last August, and Melanie Marsh Baum will be on maternity leave from
October 1 through December 8
as she and her family welcome a new baby into their life.
Join us after worship on Sunday, September 30 as we celebrate these two milestones at the Deacons' Reception with cake and other treats. Baskets will be available for those who wish to leave cards or other well wishes for Jonathan and Melanie.

George Leggiero, Covenant and University Circle Carillonneur, is being honored by the Cleveland Italian-American Heritage Committee for his contribution to the Arts in Cleveland. He is one of six 2018 honorees in various categories of public service, business, and culture. The public is invited to attend the ceremony on
Monday, October 1 at 6 p.m.
in the rotunda of Cleveland City Hall. The event is the start of Italian-American Heritage month in Cleveland. George has been Covenant Carillonneur since 1973, has directed bell choirs at Covenant and St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was on the faculty of The Cleveland Music School Settlement for 25 years. Everyone is invited, a buffet follows the ceremony.
Carol Roe will be honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at CWRU during the upcoming Homecoming and Reunion Weekend in October. She will also serve as a lecturer at the FPB Nurse Leadership Conference that same weekend. Carol, a longtime Covenant member who earned her MSN from CWRU, is currently the mayor of Cleveland Heights. Congratulations, Carol!
Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Davis! The newlyweds, who were married at Covenant
on September 1, are spending their honeymoon in South Africa and will reside
in Palm Beach, Florida.

Covenant Lecture 2018, Dr. Ryan Bonfiglio
Sunday, October 7, 10 AM and 2 PM
We welcome our 2018 Covenant Lecturer on October 7. Dr. Bonfiglio will preach at the 10 am worship service and offer a lecture at 2 pm on "Loving Stranger as Neighbor." In this lecture, he will examine biblical laws that emphasize Israel's responsibility to protect and provide for the non-Israelite stranger and how they can inform the way the church today responds to refugees and other marginalized communities. Dr.
Bonfiglio serves as the Stembler Scholar and Director of Biblical & Theological Studies at First Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. Prior to FPC, he served as a Lecturer of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary. For more information click here.

Financial Update from Este
|
Per Capita is a set amount of money per member that congregations pay to the larger Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). It helps cover the expenses associated with coordinating and performing the function of the PC (USA)'s system of government.
For 2018 the apportionment per church member is $30.23. Of that amount: $7.73 is for General Assembly, $3.25 for Synod of the Covenant, and $19.25 is for Presbytery of Western reserve.
In 2017 Covenant members donated $3,172 for the per capita, and the Church paid $11,948 to the Presbytery. Net expense "absorbed" by the Church was $8,776.
For 2018, Church of the Covenant paid $12,454.76 to the Presbytery. So far, members have donated $1,791 to offset that cost. (Shortfall to date is $10,663.76.)

Food collection for the Covenant Food Pantry this
Sunday.
This Sunday the children will collect food and financial donations for our Covenant Food Pantry, open the last Wednesday and Friday of each month, Thursday afternoons in the Connection Center for students, and for emergencies. The pantry is in need of
canned meat, pasta sauce, jelly/jam, canned soup, fruit and pudding cups
.

Make Music with Us: The Covenant music ensembles (choir and handbells) are open to all volunteers seeking an opportunity for musical expression. Church membership is not required for participation. Students are welcome. Rehearsals are every Thursday at 6:30 pm for the Beckwith Handbell Choir and 7:30 pm for the Covenant Choir. Festival! Celebrating and claiming Cleveland's anti-slavery past!

The Concert Across America to End Gun Violence
Be our guest as we take a stand against gun violence in Cleveland, Ohio and across the nation with other activists. The Karamu House, DuffyLit, Twelve Literary Arts, the Cleveland School of the Arts, and the Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word are among several local artists and organizations who will participate. The concert is free, but donations are accepted to support local efforts to end gun violence.
