October is  Adopt-A-Shelter
Dog Month

October is Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month, which means it's the perfect time to help homeless animals in shelters all across the U.S. find loving, happy homes.

If you are considering adding a dog to your family, please consider adopting, not shopping.  According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million homeless dogs enter animal shelters each year. As a result, animal shelters and rescue groups are brimming with loving dogs and puppies just waiting to meet someone to take them home.

Most shelter pets wound up there because of a human issue like a move or a divorce, or their owner became too ill to care for them, not because the animals did anything wrong. Many are already house-trained and used to living with families.

All pets adopted from ROAR are spayed/neutered, microchipped and are up-to-date on vaccinations too.

Additional ways you can celebrate Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month include  supporting your local shelter by volunteering or donating supplies.* You c an also spread the message on why Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, and pet adoption in general, are so important to all of your friends and followers through social media. Research from the ASCPA shows that the growth of social media has positively impacted adoptions. More than 65 percent of animal shelters and rescues said social media helped increase adoptions overall.

*ROAR accepts donations of gently used carriers, bedding, towels, toys, etc. We also accept opened and unopened bags of dry dog and cat food. Canned dog and cat food must be unopened and not exceed its expiration date. Please note that opened bags of food are donated to Wildlife in Crisis.  For more information, click here.

If you are shopping on Amazon for items that you can't find locally, you can select ROAR on Amazon Smile as the charity you support. ROAR's updated online wish list for shoppers who would like to donate much needed items for our shelter pets while they shop online can be accessed on ROAR's website here.

Thank you for supporting our mission and helping to  make a difference in the lives of so many less  fortunate   cats and dogs.

ROAR's Clear The Shelter Event

In August, ROAR participated for the first time in NBC 4 New York's and Telemundo 47's annual Clear the Shelters™ pet adoption drive, along with other shelters across the U.S.

ROAR experienced a historic number of adoption applications during the event. All of ROAR's  adoptable puppies that were available that weekend went to their furever homes. Also, a ROAR kitten was adopted and picked up shortly after that weekend.

More than 12,000 local pets in the Tri-state area were adopted during the campaign, and ROAR was thrilled to have contributed to this success. Nationwide, over 100,000 pets across the country were adopted.

SOOKIE and ZOE Are Still Available!
Come Meet These Special Girls!

SOOKIE

Are you looking for great cat? Sookie is a gorgeous, two-year old brown tabby cat who is super friendly. This loveable feline will look up at you with her golden eyes and rub up against your leg when you walk into our Cat Room at the shelter. Sookie is so friendly she's become ROAR's special greeter in the Cat Room and our volunteers are devoted members of her "fan club" who know she deserves to be in a loving home.

Sookie might make you chuckle a bit when you first see her unique shape ... she's a bit stocky with some small love handles. However, our volunteers work hard to keep her active.

Sookie's background is a bit of a mystery to us but we know that she must have been in a home. She likes the closeness of sharing a wooden bench with a volunteer.

Sookie would love to be the treasured only pet in a home and would just soak up love and attention. She is current with her vaccinations and has been spayed and microchipped.

ZOE

Sweet Zoe is a beautiful, seven-year old American Bulldog mix who came to ROAR as a local surrender. She is currently in one of our wonderful foster homes and is learning how much she loves to snuggle!

Zoe bonds well with people after she gets to know them. She enjoys walks, and loves hanging out and watching TV. Zoe really is a great dog! She also has her own Instagram! You can find her at Zoe.roar

We love Zoe and want to see her find her forever home, and so do our friends at Canine Company! The family who adopts Zoe will not only be getting an amazing companion, but Canine Company will also donate one free at-home Manners Obedience Training lesson and one free Mobile Grooming session if the adopting family lives within their service area.

Zoe is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and spayed.

You can follow Zoe on Instagram @zoe.roar. To schedule a meet and greet with Zoe, please call the shelter ahead of time at 203-438-0158.

Thank You AllianceBernstein!

ROAR was lucky enough to be the recipient of AllianceBernstein's volunteer initiative in September. Eight members of AllianceBernstein installed silt fencing along ROAR's fence line by the swamp where we were losing a lot of gravel  year after year due to erosion. The new fencing is already making a big difference.

Two years ago, AllianceBernstein also helped ROAR spread pea gravel in our side and back yards, and cleaned out our shed.

In addition, a few ROAR animals have been lucky enough to find their forever homes with AllianceBernstein's team.

Thank you Guy P. and the rest of the team at AllianceBernstein for all of your hard work and making a difference in the lives of our dogs and cats!
Keep Your  Pets Safe on Halloween
Five Ways You Can Prepare  for the Big Night

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is flooded with calls every Halloween from worried pet owners who need help. To help you prepare for the big night, below are five tips from the ASCPA:
  1. Lock candy safely away. Kids love to stash candy in their rooms, but a dog's keen sense of smell will lead him to even the most cleverly hidden treasure. Contact a veterinary professional right away if your pet does get into Halloween candy, especially if it contains chocolate or is sugar-free and contains xylitol.
  2. Don't leave glow sticks lying around. Glow sticks are used to help keep kids safe while they are out in the dark. Pets (especially cats) find these glow sticks to be a lot of fun as well, and we commonly get calls about pets puncturing the sticks. While most of them are labeled as non-toxic, they do have an extremely bitter taste and pets who bite into them will often drool and drool and race around the house. A little treat or sip of milk will usually stop the taste reaction.
  3. Keep your pet identified and visible. There are a lot of extra people on the streets at Halloween, and that combined with strange costumes can spook pets and cause them to bolt. If you take your pet out after dark, make sure he or she wears a reflective collar and is securely leashed. Also make sure your pet has proper identification on the collar.
  4. Calm your pet. Even pets who are kept indoors may experience intense anxiety over the large number of strangely dressed visitors. Keeping your pet away from trick-or-treaters may do the trick, but if you think more will be needed be sure and speak with your vet well in advance about options to help calm your pet.
  5. Check those costumes. Costumes can be fun for the whole family. If you are planning on dressing up your best bud, ensure that the costume fits well and isn't going to slip and tangle the pet or cause a choking hazard if chewed on. Never leave a costumed pet unattended.

Cat's Pride's  Litter for Good

Please Help Support ROAR

We have a huge opportunity and we need your help! All we need from you is a few clicks!

Cat's Pride®'s Litter for Good™ program helps shelters like ours find more cats forever homes. Every GREEN JUG™ of Cat's Pride cat litter you buy donates a pound of litter to animal welfare organizations across the country. This year alone, as many as five million pounds of litter could be donated to help shelters nationwide!

For ROAR to be eligible to receive a share of the donated litter, we need nominations from our supporters. If you haven't already nominated us, it only takes a minute at catspride.com/member-dashboard. Just join the free Cat's Pride Club, search for our shelter by our ZIP code 06877 and nominate us. It's simple, but it can make a major difference. The less we spend on litter means the more we can spend on finding cats their forever homes.

Every nomination and GREEN JUG sold means more donated litter to help us find cats their forever homes.

Fairfield County Bank & Comcast

Thank you to Fairfield County Bank and Comcast (Channel 23) for helping ROAR get the word out about our adoptable dogs and cats. In September, ROAR and Fairfield County Bank sat down to talk to Heather Hansen O'Neill of Comcast Community Forum about ROAR's programs including fostering and Pets for Vets® - ROAR CT Chapter, and Fairfield County Bank's community giving. But the show was clearly stolen by Zoe the dog! Watch the video  here and if you're interested in adopting Zoe the wonder-dog, visit our website for more information.

Why Do You Do What You Do?
" The joy of a happy dog who loves unconditionally ... and the joy of sharing that with others who rescue ROAR dogs (and cats, too!). I especially enjoy seeing families with young children who rescue a ROAR animal and the love they have for that animal over their lifetime."
