How to Read an SDS

In June 2016 OSHA implemented the program to have all SDSs’ (Safety Data Sheets) updated under GHS (Globally Harmonized System). Employers are required to have an SDS on hand for each hazardous chemical kept on site. If you come in contact with hazardous chemicals at work, you should have the proper training to protect you and your co-workers while at work. Read the full article here!

NWiR Dallas/Fort Worth Council

Happy Hour Mixer: NWiR Dallas Fort Worth Chapter had a happy hour/mixer on The Yard House on Thursday June 20th. What a wonderful time of friends, food and roofing talk!

NWiR Seattle Council

She Build: This spring the NWiR Seattle Council women strapped on their tool belts to help one single mother with some critical home repairs. Partnering with Rebuilding Together of South Sound, the ladies of the Seattle Chapter gathered for the city of Tacoma’s first ever SheBuild, taking place on National ReBuilding Together Day. NWiR Arizona Council

Annual Roof Donation:This year NWiR Arizona Council donated a free roof to Avis Lopez. Avis was a social worker who quit her job to care for four siblings who were going to be split up because they couldn't find a place who would take them. Due to the children's nationality they were stuck in the middle of politics and no subsidies were available. Frustrated with the system Avis decided to make a difference and with some help from coworkers and friends started Avis Angels. She has up to 17 kids with little help from the government. Although Avis was received a free roof it is the members of NWiR that received the biggest gift of all, the gift of giving. We all walked away knowing we helped a wonderful family who needed help. TAMKO Building Products

Too many women have experienced discrimination or harassment in the workplace, often in the form of dishonest or unethical behavior. So, what if you could work for a company that expects everyone to be honest ALL the time, even when they are not at work? And what if that company took things a step further and required annual training for all employees in an effort to prevent harassment and help ensure ethical behavior? 

While it may sound too good to be true, that company exists. I know, because I work there. At TAMKO, we call it the Rule of Basic Honesty – simply stated, employees are expected to be honest and this is enforced at all levels of the company. Plus, prevention of harassment and making ethical choices is a major focus of our company’s Chief Compliance Officer who travels to TAMKO’s locations nationwide on an annual basis to conduct training on these company policies and reinforce expectations.

Firestone Building Products

Dr. Amy Randall, Global Director of Research and Development for Firestone Building Products, recently shared some advice she would give to her younger-self coming up in the industry.

“The best advice is that people matter. Build your relationships personally and professionally. Be genuine, honest, and transparent with others. Trust takes time to build but respect can be given immediately. You never know where the help, inspiration, or opportunity will come from but it will only come if people see that you are open to it.”

ABC Supply

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the employment of roofers will grow 11 percent by 2026. With the continued demand for roofing projects comes more job opportunities. We sat down with a handful of women working at ABC Supply to get their advice on how women can succeed in this growing industry.

From managing deliveries and branch operations to working with contractors and solving their business challenges, the roles and responsibilities are different for each of these women. However, they all have two things in common: Their love for construction and the belief that women can create successful, lucrative careers in the industry.
