November 2018
Rescuing and rehoming animals requires the need for veterinarian care.

MABTR is blessed to have relationships with multiple vet clinics across the 13 states we serve.

We appreciate their valuable services, compassion, and dedication to the overall health of animals, including our Bostons.  Their energy, honesty, time, and tireless effort towards this commitment does not go unnoticed.

We ask that if you are ever in the area of one of our partnering clinics that you thank them on our behalf for their hard work in helping our Bostons.

In November MABTR will be reaching out to volunteers to help delivery goodie trays to our vets as a way of saying Thank You!

MEDICAL CORNER

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition in which pressure is placed on the eye, causing inadequate fluid drainage in the eye.  If the condition becomes chronic or persists without treatment, it will eventually cause permanent damage to the optic nerve, resulting in blindness.  Glaucoma can also lead to the eye rupturing.

In layman's terms, having glaucoma is like having a migraine 24/7.  This is not to be taken lightly, and if there is any concern that your dog has glaucoma, you need to have him tested immediately.

Bostons are prone to eye issues and glaucoma is overlooked in many cases.  Sight is a sense that if you can save, make the effort; otherwise lack of treatment for your dog's eyes can lead to their removal.

Symptoms:
  • Different sized eye pupils
  • Mild to severe eye pain (rubbing eye on the floor or with paw)
  • Appearance of vessels in the white of the eye
  • Redness of the eye
  • Cloudy cornea
  • Fluttering eye lid
  • Squinting
  • Tearing
Diagnosing:
There is only one way to confirm glaucoma, which is a pressure test that requires a specific tool that not all vets have.  When calling to schedule an appointment, ask if they have the tool to test eye pressure.  If not, then look for a different vet.

Treatment:
Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled with eye drops.  However, not
all eyes respond to the drops.  Pressures should go down within a week of starting the drops.
If the drops ...
  • WORK: regular visits to your vet is warranted to ensure pressures are controlled as there will come a time were the drops will no longer work
  • DO NOT WORK: then removal of the eye needs to be considered.

Watch out for Fall Toxins

As  autumn approaches, so do new potential dangers that pose a threat to your pet.  Below are the top 5 fall  toxins to be on the lookout for as fall begins. Keep your pet safe by keeping these out of reach!

1) Rodenticides
As the weather gets colder, mice and rats start seeking shelter in warm locations; in other words, your house! Unfortunately, the start of autumn means the start of mouse and rat poisoning. There are several types of active ingredients in these mouse and rat poisons, and they all work (and kill) in different ways. Depending on what type of mouse and rat poison was ingested, clinical signs include:

2) Chocolate
Need we say it?  Holidays = sweets, and many of our favorite sweets contain chocolate.  While we humans may love it, it can be dangerous to our beloved pets.

The toxic ingredient: methylxanthines (called theobromine) and caffeine. With mild poisoning, clinical signs of chocolate poisoning include:
With more significant ingestions, clinical signs of cardiac effects (including a racing heart rate, high blood pressure, and abnormal heart rhythm) or pancreatitis (i.e.,  inflammation of the pancreas) may be seen. With severe poisonings, chocolate can result in tremors, seizures, and, rarely, death. Keep in mind that with chocolate, the darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more dangerous it is! Semi-sweet chocolate or Baker's Chocolate contains very toxic amounts of theobromine as compared to milk chocolate or white chocolate.
3) Compost/mulch piles
Going green is important to many of us, and some of us even make our own compost. However, before you start composting, make sure you have a well-secured, fenced off compost pile. If  wildlife or your dog ingests the compost directly, it can result in severe poisoning secondary to the mold (containing tremorgenic mycotoxins). Clinical signs of compost poisoning include:
  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Panting
  • Agitation
  • Incoordination
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
4) Mushrooms
While the majority of mushrooms are benign and only result in minor symptoms when ingested, there are a few types that can be deadly (even to humans!) when ingested. Because mushroom identification is so difficult, we  veterinarians have to err on the side of caution and assume any mushroom ingested by a pet is toxic.
The most dangerous type? The Amanita mushroom.

Depending on the type of mushroom ingested, clinical signs include:
  • Gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain)
  • Neurologic signs (e.g., walking drunk, tremoring, agitation, seizures)
  • Organ damage (e.g., liver or kidney failure)
  • Even death
5) Mothballs
As mice and rats come into the house to stay warm, so do moths! Mothballs may look benign, but can be quite dangerous as they typically contain chemicals such as paradichlorobenzene or naphthalene. The classic smell of mothballs is typically due to "old-fashioned" mothballs that contain naphthalene, and these are generally much more toxic than the paradichlorobenzene-containing ones. Clinical signs from mothball poisoning in  dogs and  cats include:
  • Gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, abdominal pain)
  • Neurologic signs (e.g., lethargy, tremors, etc.)
  • Blood changes (e.g., abnormalities in the red blood cells)
  • And rarely, even organ failure
When in doubt, if you think your pet was poisoned, call your veterinarian, emergency veterinarian, or the  ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center for life-saving care.
Adoptable Dog of the Month

Hi there, my name is Joy!  I turned 10 in March and I weigh 20 pounds.  I need a new home because my owner had to go to a nursing home. I am being fostered in Omaha, NE.

I will share upfront that I snore, and I want to sleep in bed with my family members.  If you are a light sleeper, plan to crate me or place me in another room, then I am probably not the dog for you.

I love everyone of all ages - always happy to see the young and the old.   I have a big smile on my face most of the time.   I am still full of a lot of spunk for my age!

I would rather not be in a home with lots of stairs if possible. I can do them but in time they will not be my friend.

I am not fond of a crate at all so right now I live with a retired foster family, and when they leave the house I can be trusted to free roam.

***Eligible for the Golden Paws Program!***

MABTR Alumni - Suzie

We welcomed Suzie into our lives 4 years ago this June from MABTR in St. Louis.  She came to us a bit thin and with a back story of having been given up 3 times before MABTR worked with her.  My wife and I continue to wonder daily how 3 different families/people could have given up such a sweet little girl with nothing but love in her heart.

Suzie has been a delight since the first day we got her.  She took to commands well, potty trained, and started kissing and snuggling right away.  She sleeps with us at night (after sleeping most of the day) and is the first thing we see in the morning when she hears the alarm.  It is a ruffle from under the blankets and then some wet kisses to start the day.

Suzie has had one medical challenge in which a front toe had to be removed.  We learned so much from her when she was recovering on how to make the best of a situation and a day.  While she was in some pain at the beginning and had to wear the cone, she was always giving out kisses and always wanted rubs and snuggles even when we were changing dressings or taking her to the vet.  She kept us happy even when she was the one healing.

In the end, each day she calms us down, makes us laugh, and does something new that we enjoy or can learn from. We have recently moved to a new house with many backyard squirrels and we enjoy watching her think she can climb trees or catch a bird. She continues to very sweet and loving, and always there for us whatever we need. -Tom K

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

AGE is just a number

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.

Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.

MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
