Welcome to our Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) quarterly newsletter. The goal in producing this newsletter is to keep our members informed and involved. We are highlighting opportunities for collaborations, new funding opportunities, new grants and promotions, new personnel, and upcoming seminars and events. We always welcome your suggestions and contributions for future issues. 
Spotlight On
We are pleased to announce the Rutgers Cancer Survivorship Research Center led by Sharon Manne, PhD, Professor, Section Chief of Population Science, Associate Director of Cancer Prevention, Control and Population Research at Rutgers Cancer Institute. The mission of the Rutgers Cancer Survivorship Research Center is to foster the implementation of evidence-based practices to improve quality of life and optimize outcomes for cancer survivors in New Jersey. The Center’s research foci are: 1) Ascertain and monitor unmet needs and disparities, medical outcomes, and quality of life outcomes among NJ’s cancer survivors by building a NJ survivor cohort; 2) Develop and implement best-practice survivorship care standards for NJ’s cancer survivors at the patient, provider, and health care system level; and 3) Foster clinically-integrated survivorship outcomes research across the RWJB Health System. Center members cross Rutgers Departments of Medical Oncology, Family Medicine and the School of Public Health. If you are interested in joining this effort, please let us know!

Anita Kinney, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor, Director of the Center for Cancer Health Disparities at Rutgers School of Public Health and Associate Director of Cancer Health Equity at Rutgers Cancer Institute served on the symposium steering committee and was an invited panelist for the “Designing a Successful Cohort for NJ” session.

Dr. Crabtree Named Distinguished Professor
Congratulations to Benjamin F. Crabtree, PhD , Professor, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School for being names as a Distinguished Professor by the Rutgers University Board of Governors.

Dr. Crabtree joined Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1999, leading the research division of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health for 16 years. A medical anthropologist, he was recognized by the Board for his groundbreaking research and work toward understanding and improving family medicine and primary care delivery, and in health care qualitative research.

Carolyn Heckman, PhD , Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology, Section of Population Science and team have created a Facebook page and Twitter account called Rutgers Cancer Prevention and Population Research for the purpose of promoting the activities, achievements, and research of CPC and Population Science faculty. These platforms can be used as a recruitment and promotion source for current research opportunities. Additionally, a webpage under the same name has been added to CINJ.org under the Cancer Prevention and Control tab. Update from the Population Science Research Support Shared Resource

As of July 1, Dr. Sharon Manne is the new Director of the Population Science Research Support Shared Resource . Thank you to Dr. Eillot Coups for his leadership as the Director, and wish him great luck in his future endeavors. Please consider working with the Population Science Research Support Share Resource for your research. This resource provides efficient, high-quality data collection, management, and consultation for population science studies. We work with researchers and clinicians to provide expertise and technical support for project development and implementation through comprehensive study management tools, database design and management, electronic data collection, and quality control of data management processes. For more information click here , please feel free to reach out to Dr. Manne directly or contact Carolina Lozada . They would be glad to meet with faculty and their staff to discuss how the Population Science Research Support Shared Resource can support upcoming grant applications and projects.
ScreenNJ Continuing and Expanding

ScreenNJ , a collaborative program led by the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and funded in part by the New Jersey Department of Health, is continuing and expanding in FY 2020. Directed by Anita Kinney, PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Director, Cancer Health Equity and Engagement, and co-directed by Mary O’Dowd, Executive Director for Health Systems and Population Health Integration, RBHS, the goal of ScreenNJ is to: 

  • increase screening for lung and colorectal cancer
  • reduce cancer mortality rates
  • educate New Jersey residents about the importance of cancer screening, early detection, and prevention

The program has 26 clinical & outreach partners at 109 sites in all 21 NJ counties. Expansion efforts are well underway. If you’re interested in learning more about ScreenNJ and partner opportunities, please reach out to Emily Carey .
