Sunday, October 13 - Intergenerational Formation - All-ages
Will you be in town this holiday weekend? Join us for a reflection on love and a celebration of our Good Shepherd who knows each of us by name. We will be creating a multi-colored ribbon banner with messages of love from St. Bede's for our youth to carry with them in the Atlanta Pride parade later in the day.
Sunday, October 20 - Focus on Hunger
As many of you have already noticed, the Community Engagement Committee is directing our explorations and efforts toward hunger this year. Dixie Snider offered a moving reflection on hunger during Eucharist a few weeks ago. Our children are leading us in alleviating lunch debt in our local elementary schools. Soon, we'll be joining with Emmaus House to provide "Thanksgiving at Home." And there is more to come. Please pray with us about hunger, in our community, diocese, and world. Share your ideas, or take action as you feel called. Together we can make a difference.
Please join the Community Engagement Committee for a special event on October 20th. During the Adult Formation hour, we'll hear about food ministries at Emmaus House, an Episcopal ministry in the Peoplestown neighborhood of Atlanta. Presenting will be our own Dee Weems and Adam Seeley, director of the food pantry at Emmaus House.

NEW Safeguarding God's Children Training
Saturday, October 19 at St. Bedes - 9am-Noon - Room M-110
The Episcopal Church has developed new standards and policies for the protection of ALL children from abuse and bullying of any kind. Even if you are up to date on your required SGC training, this training is completely new and will present the new standards with particular focus on the needs of LGBTQIA+ and differently abled children. Your trainers are Alyssa Sali and Claudia Fedarko. We guarantee an engaging and worthwhile training (and some food).
Who is required to take Safeguarding God's Children?
HERE'S WHO: All clergy whether stipendiary, non-stipendiary, or otherwise who are engaged in ministry or service to the church; all persons who teach, supervise or assist with supervising children or youth in ministries, programs or activities more often than occasionally. All paid or volunteer Church Personnel whose work regularly takes them throughout the facility or grounds; all persons who provide transportation to children or youth without other adults in the vehicle more than occasionally; all vestry members or members of similar decision making groups who have the authority to approve the creation of ministries, programs or activities for children or youth.

Our October Men of Bede's breakfast will be this coming Saturday, October 12th, 9:00, at the Old Hickory House on Northlake Parkway.
There is limited parking in front of the restaurant due to construction; however, there is ample parking available behind the office buildings where Northlake Parkway approaches the I-285, northbound entrance ramp. This parking area is adjacent to the restaurant.

Forward Day by Day for November - January
Forward Day by Day is a booklet of daily inspirational meditations reflecting on a specific Bible passage, chosen from the daily lectionary readings as listed in the Revised Common Lectionary or the Daily Office from the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer.
You can pick up your copy, while supplies last, in the Connect Center. We have copies in English and Spanish.

If You Need a Name Tag ...
Please let the Parish Office know if you need a name tag. The procedure is simple. Just put a note on the Parish Administrator's desk in the office and by the next Sunday your new name tag will be on the "spinners".

Sunday School 9:30-10:30 - We will head out again to join the hundreds of thousands of fellow Atlantans and walk in the Festival Parade for Atlanta Pride celebration. The mission of the Atlanta Pride Festival is to provide unity, visibility, and wellness among persons with persons with widely diverse gender and sexual identities. Please bring $ for brunch (we'll grab something to eat before we head to midtown.), and a Marta card. We'll return to the church between 4-4:30. Please note that we will be gathering to attend church at 8:15 as a group BEFORE Sunday School.

There is a retreat in your future!  Mark your calendars for September 25-27, 2020. We have secured a lodge at Forrest Hills Resort & Conference Center in Dahlonega, GA for our next retreat. Food Insecurity Community Engagement Lunch,
Sunday, October 20th
After the 10:45 Eucharist, we'll hear about the work of Bread for the World. Included in this segment will be the opportunity to share your thoughts with your representatives regarding the revisions of hunger-related federal programs. A light lunch will be provided. (It will help us to plan if you sign up for this segment in the Connect Center, but know that you are welcome with or without an RSVP.)
For those interested in attending, please sign up in the Connect Center. There is also a sign up for those who would be willing to provide a crockpot of soup or a loaf of bread.

St. Bede's and the Church of Our Saviour will host the second annual Art from the Heart here at St. Bede's on October 25th and 26th. There are now 37 artists engaged to participate, many of whom participated last year. We have some exciting new artists participating. The artists will have the opportunity to set up their individual booths from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24th and from 8:00 a.m. until noon on Friday, October 25th. We will then open to the public, closing at 5:00 p.m. to prepare for the Preview Party that begins at 6:00 p.m. The entrance tickets for the Preview Party are $10.00 per person and include appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks. Wine and soft drinks will be available for a small donation. On Saturday, October 26th, the Market will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Don't forget this would be a perfect time and place to begin or complete your holiday shopping.
We are in need of volunteers to ensure this year's market is another exceptional experience. Please consider donating some time; even an hour or two will make a difference. We need volunteers on both the 24th and 25th to help move some furniture and prepare and mark off spaces for the booths. We need appetizers donated and volunteers to help set up and serve the food and drink at the Preview Party. We need volunteers while the market is open on Friday and Saturday. And lastly, we need volunteers to help us move the furniture back in place and clean-up on Saturday after 5:00 p.m. Sign-up sheets are in the Commons. We are happy to answer any questions you might have about what the volunteers will be doing.
St. Bede's is donating our share of the proceeds to Forging Futures in Haiti, Inc., a program that many of our parishioners have been involved with over the years. Their website describes the programs as "dedicated to raising financial support for helping to feed, educate and empower children by maintaining schools and employing teachers in Leogane, Haiti." If you are not able to attend the Preview or Market, please consider making a donation to Forging Futures before or after the event.

Come One, Come All! Atlanta Pride Parade!
Sunday, October 13
The youth group of St. Bede's would like to invite any and all members of the parish to walk with them and parishes from all over the Diocese in this year's Atlanta Pride Parade on Sun, October 13. The parade is from 12-2pm. We will celebrate Eucharist at the 8:15 service, go to Sunday School, grab something to eat, and head out to the Chamblee Marta station. From there we will travel to downtown and march, returning to the church by 3:30. All ages are invited! Any questions, please don't hesitate to email Beth Cannon at

Join with others from St. Bede's to visit detainees at the
Stewart Immigration Detention Center
Saturday, November 9
St. Bede's congregation has the opportunity to visit detainees at the
Stewart Immigration Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia on Saturday, November 9. We hope to visit about once a quarter, and this is the last trip for this year. If you are interested please sign up on the sheet in the commons or email Junior Abraham by October 21
We will leave St. Bede's at about 7:00am and return in the afternoon. Orientation is required for first time visitors and will be provided at St. Bede's. English, Spanish, and French languages are spoken, as well as others. Visits are a maximum of one hour. This has been a blessing for those who have visited and we hope you will consider joining us.

Mission Trip to Honduras, November 9-16 
Kay and John Entrekin went on a mission trip to Honduras last year through Honduras Outreach International located here in Tucker. We are going back this year from November 9-16 and there are currently seven people signed up for the trip. They would love to have at least ten people go. The jelly supply and demand has balanced out, so we're back in the business of collecting jelly donations. There is a jelly basket in the Connection Center for your jars. All of us at Forging Futures in Haiti are indebted to a little animal known as the PIG. In Creole, there are two words for pig: kochon and pouso. We send $7000 USD to Haiti each and every month to support our schools and even more to cover ongoing maintenance and constant emergencies. But know this: One half of our needed revenue will result from the proceeds of this BBQ. I am always asked: what can we do to help? The answer: Buy tickets, tell your friends, and come and enjoy. That is all it takes. $30.00 per person; $100.00 per family - which guarantees that 70 faculty and staff are employed for 6 months, 500 children are sitting at desks receiving a cherished education and everyone has a nutritious meal every school day.
T. S. Eliot once wrote: "So much evil done in the world is done by people with good intentions." Let me explain. There had been thousands upon thousands of pigs in Haiti for many years. These little pigs were a sturdy and hearty breed that had adapted to the harsh conditions in Haiti, ate almost anything and, in fact, could live without food for over 3 full days. Every peasant family owned several pigs. There were family members. They bred healthy piglets, they provided food and fertilizer for the fields, and upon slaughter or sale, provided money for weddings and funerals and celebrations that held the family and community together. More importantly, the money enabled Haitian children to attend school rather than having to scramble around to hard scrabble a living.
It all turned bad in the 1970s when several cases of swine flu were discovered in the DR and Haiti. The United States conceived a plan to protect the American pork industry by convincing the Haitian Government to eradicate the Creole pig - the lynch pin of the Haitian economy! In 13 months, every Creole pig was killed. The Haitians have bitter and tragic memories of this sordid process. It was a devil's bargain. Every family who lost a pig would be compensated with a home grown American pig - which was proffered as better anyway. But the American pigs were not able to adapt to the Haitian conditions and died off by the thousands. Net result: Haitians 0. What a deal! Without the dependable anchor that the Creole pig gave to the peasant economy, Haiti sank deeper into misery. And school attendance decreased by 35% as children were needed to scramble to salvage a living for the family.
As of now, Haitian and French agronomists are breeding a new variety of pig similar to the Creole pig. It is the only hope to repopulate the cherished Creole pig and to capture again their enormous contribution to the Haitian economy. What can you do? Come to the BBQ and enjoy. It is an easy way to help.

This past year, Presiding Bishop Curry has urged people of faith to follow The Way of Love, fostering a community of people who follow Jesus by forming loving, liberating and life-giving relationships with God, their neighbors, and the environment.
This Way of Love is reflected by the Diocese of Atlanta's purpose statement:
We challenge ourselves and the world to love like Jesus as we worship joyfully, serve compassionately, and grow spiritually.
What does Love in Action look like in a world that is hurting? ReviveATL invites us to live out our call to serve Jesus and love as he loves the unwelcome, the disenfranchised, the lost, and the found.
All are welcome. Come experience Love in Action.
Details: Prior to the Revival, food trucks will be available from 4:30-6 p.m. to allow for early arrivals. A more detailed program will be released this fall.
