Dear Fellow Servants of Jesus Christ, Jim casual 8-2014

The devastation caused by Hurricane Florence is immense. The death toll is currently at 32 people including a one-year-old child. Homes and businesses have been destroyed. Lives will never be the same.

As the victims rebuild their lives, many will question God. Where is God in all of this? If God is all-powerful, couldn't he have prevented all this destruction? If God is all-loving, wouldn't he have wanted to stop it? It appears to many that the only explanation is that God is neither all-powerful or all-loving. Claiming both God's sovereignty and his love doesn't seem possible.

Yet, this is exactly what Christians do in the face of the reality of evil. I have done very few funerals without reading Psalm 23 - The Shepherd's Psalm. Why is the 23rd Psalm such a source of comfort in the face of death? It is because it eloquently affirms God's greatness, God's goodness and the reality of evil.

In just one verse we have both God's greatness and goodness -- "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." Let's look at this psalm in more detail in outline form.

God is great ; he is my shepherd. And because of his great, abundant care as my shepherd, I lack nothing. He is able to meet all of my needs--even in death for "I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever!"

God is good ; he is my shepherd. I have a personal relationship with him. He is not a distant God who is completely uninvolved in my life. Rather, he lovingly works to provide me with good things--green pastures and still waters. He even restores my soul.

Evil is real. The psalm does not gloss over the pain and suffering of this world but acknowledges the reality of evil: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." Why? "For Thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me." Notice the appeal to God's greatness (the protection offered by his rod and staff) and goodness (the fact that God does protect and comfort). God is able to protect and comfort because he is sovereign. But not only is God able, he is willing to protect and comfort because he is loving.

The psalm closes with the assurance of God's goodness, and the sure hope that God's power will keep us in his presence now and forever -- "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." No wonder this psalm has been a tremendous comfort to God's people in times of tragedy, sickness and death! It affirms three truth in response to the problem of evil: God is great; God is good; evil is real.

Let's pray for the victims of Hurricane Florence that they may find solace in the arms of the Good Shepherd.

In Christ's love,
Pastor Jim

SuperStart Preteen Worship Conference (Oct. 19-20 in Duluth, GA): This overnight event is specifically designed for 4th and 5th graders as the
demand for preteen-specific ministry has continued to increase within America's churches over the past decade. They need teaching that is specific to their age group - not too young (or "boring," as they would say it) and not too old. SuperStart exists to help fill the void for this age group, and to come alongside the church in a fun, inventive way to reach students that are often overlooked.

Cost for the event is $90 per child and $45 per chaperone (limited spaces). Register now by going to: www.saxegotha.org/events. Contact Lori Lowman with any questions: [email protected].
Memory Café (Last Thursday of the month, 10:30-11:30 am in the Light House Atrium) provides a gathering place for friends with Alzheimer's (or other dementias), along with their caregivers and families, to relax and enjoy socialization, refreshments, discussion and Christ-centered encouragement. If you enjoy cooking, baking or serving others, please prayerfully consider volunteering to help with the Bereavement Ministry. We provide light food for receptions following funerals for Saxe Gotha members or a meal for family members on the day of a funeral. This could not happen without help from Saxe Gotha members. If you think you may be interested in helping with this much needed Ministry please call Vicki Williamson at 803-957-5068 for more information.
Stephen Ministry  is our congregation's one-to-one care giving ministry. These connections are confidential and matched up by gender. God works through Stephen Ministers to plant a seed of hope and healing in a person whose life seems barren and forlorn because of crisis or tragedy.  What do Stephen Ministers do?  These individuals listen to people in need, explore feelings, pray, share Christ's love, maintain confidentiality, and attend to the care-giving process, while leaving the results to God.  Stephen Ministers have big hearts.  If you are feeling unloved or need a friend, contact  Carol Perrin  at (803)917-6690 , the referral coordinator. Please know that your identity and requests are kept confidential.
