Beautifully written, thought-provoking, intense and cleverly wrought, this is the most extraordinary first novel from a mesmerising new talent.
One August afternoon, on the shoreline of the north-eastern edge of Russia, two sisters are abducted. In the ensuing weeks, then months, the police investigation turns up nothing. Echoes of the disappearance reverberate across a tightly woven community, with the fear and loss felt most deeply among its women.
Set on the remote Siberian peninsula of Kamchatka,
Disappearing Earth
draws us into the world of an astonishing cast of characters, all connected by an unfathomable crime. In a story as propulsive as it is emotionally engaging, and through a young writer's virtuosic feat of empathy and imagination, this powerful novel provides a new understanding of the intricate bonds of family and community, in a Russia unlike any we have seen before.

Upcoming Exhibits and Displays
|
|
|
Dr. Gerald Hazard was the first pediatrician in Barnstable Village starting in 1965. After retiring in 2002, he took up watercolor painting and has been at it since. He is self-taught and views his art as a hobby rather than comercial venture. His paintings will be on display in the Simpkins Room throughout November.

The 6th Grade students from Barnstable Intermediate School’s Gateway Program have been hard at work creating handmade children’s books. These inventive and artistic students have written, illustrated, and bound their own original tales, and they are very excited to share their work with the patrons of Sturgis Library! These will be shown in our lobby display cases.

Did you know that Sturgis Library receives only about 40% of its annual operating budget
from the Town of Barnstable? The Library is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization,
and we need to raise nearly 60% of our funds from donations, grants, proceeds from sales and events, and other non-municipal sources. Please help us raise the funds we need to provide
you with exemplary library services. Click the button below to make a donation.
