Welcoming our new artistic residents:
Ephimero: a Dominican Graff Perspective

We are pleased to welcome our new artistic residency project,  Ephimero: a Dominican Graff Perspective, an interactive archive and exhibit that functions as a platform for cultural research and community experience. Its focus is on Dominican street art and graffiti gestures made in public and private spaces by artists working both in the Dominican Republic and others working abroad. The project proposes the organization of a large-scale exhibition to take place simultaneously at Santo Domingo, New York City and San Juan.

Artists Marie Jiménez and  Carlos Jesús Martínez Domínguez behind the project are utilizing Loisaida's El Semillero to digitize an archive of hundreds of graffiti artists works on "blacbooks" from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and beyond.

Stay tuned for our next encuentro!

#activistestates                                 @loisaidainc.center

An examination of participatory practices, buildings, and properties in the Lower East Side that are celebrated sites of resistance.

Vacant lots, storefronts, schoolhouses, factories and abandoned tenements in Loisaida became havens for experimental, communal practices. Amid current debates about urban justice and access to the city, Activist Estates critically re-evaluates the place of counter-institutional practices that shape the landscape of New York City and reveal the critical relationship between real estate, architecture and activism.

Screenings: 8-9 p.m.
208 West 13th Street NY, NY 10011

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center presents the work of award-winning film director Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz who will share her films about migration and queer love in the Caribbean. As part of a larger New York City Retrospective taking place, The Center will present the documentary "Sugar Pathways" followed by the short film "Soléne" and Q&A led by former Speaker of the New York City Council, Melissa Mark-Viverito.

All are welcome and no one is ever turned away.

Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz is an award-winning filmmaker of Afro-Indigenous descent and Puerto Rican heritage native to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Ms. Bermúdez-Ruiz's films have garnered national and international attention and have been shown worldwide. She is currently on a NY and LA Film Premiere/Academic Lecture Tour.

"Sugar Pathways" tells the riveting story of the unwilling migration by Puerto Rican families from the small Caribbean island of Vieques to the US Virgin Islands. This powerful and vibrant film recounts their will to survive the journey, integrate and contribute to the culture, economy and politics of the U.S. Virgin Islands. "Sugar Pathways" is narrated by actress Luna Lauren Vélez of the Emmy Award-winning Showtime series "Dexter."

Soléne, a Hollywood starlet, returns to her Caribbean home in a quest for love and romance with Camilla, a reigning Stand Up Paddle (SUP) athlete. Will their love survive the wrath of a discriminating and vengeful stalker?
