The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center presents the work of award-winning film director Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz who will share her films about migration and queer love in the Caribbean. As part of a larger New York City Retrospective taking place, The Center will present the documentary "Sugar Pathways" followed by the short film "Soléne" and Q&A led by former Speaker of the New York City Council, Melissa Mark-Viverito.

Johanna Bermúdez-Ruiz is an award-winning filmmaker of Afro-Indigenous descent and Puerto Rican heritage native to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Ms. Bermúdez-Ruiz's films have garnered national and international attention and have been shown worldwide. She is currently on a NY and LA Film Premiere/Academic Lecture Tour.
"Sugar Pathways" tells the riveting story of the unwilling migration by Puerto Rican families from the small Caribbean island of Vieques to the US Virgin Islands. This powerful and vibrant film recounts their will to survive the journey, integrate and contribute to the culture, economy and politics of the U.S. Virgin Islands. "Sugar Pathways" is narrated by actress Luna Lauren Vélez of the Emmy Award-winning Showtime series "Dexter."
Soléne, a Hollywood starlet, returns to her Caribbean home in a quest for love and romance with Camilla, a reigning Stand Up Paddle (SUP) athlete. Will their love survive the wrath of a discriminating and vengeful stalker?
