Hello TJ,
It was great to see so many familiar and new faces during our parent teacher conferences that were recently held. Your support in helping ensure your students are coming to school have helped as we have seen an increase in our daily average attendance - keep it up! A reminder that the 2nd 6-week grading period will be closing soon and that you can access your students grades through the Parent Portal. If you do not have a Parent Portal account please go to: https://myportal.dpsk12.org/ to create an account.
Construction Update:
Our new marquee has been installed, now we are just waiting on the electrical to be wired and then the masonry work will be done at the base of the marquee. We can't wait to use it!
The concession stand is finished and we are now waiting on Denver Fire to give us the go-ahead with a Certification of Occupancy inspection. Once that is done we can use it!
The lights on the football/soccer/lacrosse/track now work! We tested them out for the first time a few days ago and planned to have our Boys "Senior Night" Soccer game against South "under the lights" but the snow came in last Wednesday and put a damper on those plans.

Actualización de la construcción:
Nuestra nueva carpa ha sido instalada, ahora estamos esperando la electricidad para ser cableado y luego el trabajo de albañilería se hará en la base de la carpa. ¡No podemos esperar a usarlo!
El puesto de concesión está terminado y ahora estamos esperando en Denver Fire para darnos el visto bueno con una Certificación de Inspección de Ocupación. Una vez hecho esto podemos usarlo!
Las luces en el fútbol / fútbol / lacrosse / pista ahora funcionan! Los probamos por primera vez hace unos días y planeamos tener nuestro partido de fútbol "Senior Night" contra south "under the lights", pero la nieve llegó el miércoles pasado y puso un amortiguador en esos planes.

So....what are some areas we focus on as school counselors?
- Assisting students in exploring career areas and navigating their college and career options
- Delivering classroom lessons to students through the ICAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan) curriculum (ICAP is a graduation requirement starting with the class of 2021)
- Supporting students' social and emotional well-being
- Providing additional support in collaboration with Denver Scholarship Foundation during the college application process
- Working with others - parents, teachers and other school staff - to help students succeed
- Advising students on scheduling and assessing student abilities to support appropriate course placement
- Checking credits and reviewing graduation requirements with students
TJHS Counseling Program Mission
As professional school counselors, we provide a data-driven counseling program that decreases barriers to student achievement by advocating for all students and promoting equity and inclusivity. Through collaboration with students, staff members, and families we strive to support the wellness of the whole student in academic, career/college and social-emotional domains. We proactively deliver Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) curriculum, conduct small-group interventions and provide individual student meetings as a means to prepare students for a successful future.

Seminar Focus
As students transition into the new school year, many experience feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, social isolation, and rejection. The intensity of these feelings can be both overwhelming and debilitating and as result lead to school refusal and social isolation. Parents and educators understanding the etiology of school refusal is important and necessary to accurately intervene and re-engage students in their academic environment.
This training session will help parents and educators learn & understand:
- Common factors and causes related to school refusal and what to do about it
- The "not so obvious" considerations relative to learning differences, undiagnosed, or mis-treated learning disorders and lack of academic engagement or school attendance
- The impact of significant to profound Executive Functioning deficits and the role this plays in escalating behavior problems, self-esteem and declining academic performance in middle and high school
- How social differences impact inclusion and belonging in peer relationships differently in elementary, middle and high school
- The impact of social isolation, depression and anxiety and the influence this has on identity formation
- When school refusal is problematic and how to determine what type of intervention is necessary
- Parent leadership principle's designed to manage high stress and conflict in the home environment as a result of school related conflict
- Parental leadership and the impact this has on improved functioning, self-esteem, school participation, and family level healing.

one full day event for the Junior class over the course of November 5

.
Students with last names starting with A-J will attend the event on November 5th and those with their last name starting with K-Z will attend on November 6th. The event will be held in the gym.

Service Hours and Volunteer Opportunity

Are you in need of service hours or just looking for an opportunity to volunteer? A Little Help -- an organization that supports older adults in remaining independent in their homes -- has upcoming
Service Saturdays on November 2nd and 9th in Denver.
Volunteers will help mostly with raking leaves for neighbors in the vicinity of TJ on November 9th, you will meet at South High. If you are interested in volunteering on November 2nd, you will be helping homes in the Park Hill and Mayfair neighborhoods.
Individuals, group volunteers, and teams from schools and organizations are welcome and encouraged.

At ADOLESCO YOUTH EXCHANGE we will match you with a student about your own age in France, Germany, Italy, or Spain (your choice), you will decide exactly WHEN (whatever's best for your schedule), and for HOW LONG (up to 12 weeks) you want to go on exchange and host as part of our flexible and affordable nonprofit language immersion and cultural exchange program for qualifying students between ages 9 and 18.

Youth Mental Health Educational Event

Join our inspiring presentation and resource fair for parents, teachers, and school employees!
Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 5:30-9:00 p.m.
STEM School Highlands Ranch
Healing Our Youth: Get Educated! is a mental health educational program that educates schools (teachers, administrative staff, school employees), parents, and community members who work with youth about mental disorders. Each event includes a 2 hour panelist presentation (

) and a resource fair. The presentation is from 6:30pm-8:30pm and the resource fair is from 5:30-6:30pm and 8:30pm-9:00pm. For teachers and other professionals, 2 contact hours are awarded for continuing education. The exhibitors at the resource fair include: local mental health hospitals/clinics/networks, suicide awareness programs, nutritionists, private practice counselors and therapists, nonprofits that provide a variety of therapies for mental health issues, eating disorder clinics, local mental health support groups, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Crisis Intervention Team officers from local sheriff and police departments, and many more valuable community resources and support.
Our goal is to educate the adults who are most involved in the lives of our youth so these adults have the knowledge and tools to identify mental health concerns in youth early, which will then hopefully lead to earlier treatment of mental disorders to improve outcomes for our youth with mental health issues.

We would like to extend a great big thank you to all the parents that helped make the Staff Appreciation Dinner happen last week. The conference days are so long for staff and teachers and having a homecooked meal helps keep them going. So many parents donated food, money and time. It takes a village to make our high school community strong and we have a great village!
A special shout out to the PTO Hospitality volunteers Brenna Hatami, Margarita Mehan, Robin Pickens, Vicky McPheron, Brett Plue, Carrie Oss, Mel Toner, Erica Ward and Dawna Edwards who set up and cleaned up the event.

All you need to do is register your King Soopers loyalty card number or alternate ID (e.g. phone number) to earn money for TJ. After you register for the program, a percentage of ALL of your King Soopers purchases will go to TJ.
Important: At the point of purchase, you must swipe your loyalty card or type in your alternate ID in order for your purchases to count toward TJ's fundraising.

Transition to Higher Education Course.

Help 11th grade and 12th grade students with IEP and 504 Plans get connected to learn the essentials for making a seamless and successful transition from high school to higher education! The Transition to Higher Education course is a free spring semester course for DPS and Cherry Creek School District taught on Auraria Campus by campus faculty and staff on Wednesday evenings from 4:30-6:30 from January 22nd-April 22nd. See prerequisites and help students apply at the application linked HERE
Your student is perfect for this class if they:
-are in 11th grade, 12th grade with an IEP or 504 plan,
-have the ability, skills, and motivation to access college level coursework upon high school completion
-have a postsecondary goal to attend a 2yr, 4yr, or vocational school after high school and
-meet requirements as outlined in the application
Only 15 spaces are available for DPS students, so support eligible students with applying now to be considered for acceptance into the class. We are looking forward to seeing applicants from your school! The application window closes November 21st.

The class of 2022 has two faculty sponsors,
Jillian Gleason and Maggie Kennedy, but parents are needed to work with the staff to plan fundraising activities. Parent sponsors also plan community building activities for the parents of the class of 2022. Each
class is expected to raise money needed to host their Prom, After Prom and other activities senior year. The sooner the fundraiser get started, the more choices there will be for events senior year. The time commitment can be as little or as much you can share.
Your involvement in any capacity is important and appreciated. We are successful because of your behind-the-scenes contributions, large and small. It all adds up to a stronger community. An engaged parent body shows our students that we care about them!
