California hosts 16th annual dairy challenge
College dairy students - 230 in total - from 25 states and three Canadian provinces traversed to sunny California for the 16th annual Dairy Challenge®. This was the first time many of the students had visited a western dairy, which provided extra intrigue and challenge in their task as a consultant team for a local dairy.
Visalia, Calif., was home base for the 2017 North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge® (NAIDC) held March 30 to April 1, with seven area dairies participating in the educational event. Dairy students from 37 colleges worked to improve their dairy management and communication skills, networked with other students, and explored industry careers.
Dairy Challenge is a unique, real-world experience where dairy students work as a team and apply their college coursework to evaluate and provide solutions for an operating dairy farm. In Visalia, two programs ran concurrently - the 16th annual Dairy Challenge contest and the fifth annual Dairy Challenge Academy. The events were coordinated by the NAIDC Board of Directors and the western planning committee.
This year's contest included 34 universities, whose four-person teams competed for awards based on their quality of teams' farm analysis and appropriate solutions. Their farm presentations were evaluated by a panel of five judges, including dairy producers, veterinarians, finance specialists and seasoned agribusiness personnel.
At Saturday evening's banquet, the following contest teams and students were announced as First Place winners, with each student receiving a $200 scholarship:
  • Cornell University: Grant Feldpausch, Lauren Hill, Clyde Sammons, Jamie St. Pierre and Dr. Mike Van Amburgh (coach)
  • North Carolina State University: Melissa Helms, Jared Robbins, Aimee Sink, Amanda Smith and Dr. Steve Washburn (coach)
  • University of Minnesota: Johanna Knorr, Andrew Krause, Fredrick Mansfield, Lance Sexton and Marcia Endres (coach)
  • Virginia Tech: Linda Beckett, Whitney Bowman, Daniel Comyn, Mary-Katherine Jones and Dr. Alex White (coach)
The next national event will also be hosted in Visalia, Calif., April 12- 14, 2018. Four regional events are held in late fall and winter; details and more information about Dairy Challenge are available at www.dairychallenge.org .
Canadian pricing scheme causes major disruptions in U.S. dairy
The U.S. dairy sector and state agriculture officials continue to urge President Donald Trump to take immediate action against Canada's repeated and escalating disregard for its trade obligations under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Most recently, Canada implemented a new national pricing policy that blatantly blocks American dairy exports and will enable significant dumping of Canadian dairy products onto the world market, they said. As a result, dozens of dairy farmers in the Midwest recently learned that they must find new customers for their milk by May 1, which will cause considerable economic hardship and possibly force them to go out of business.

In a joint letter sent to the President, the International Dairy Foods Assn. (IDFA), the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) urged the Trump Administration to tell Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to halt the new pricing policy and restore imports of the blocked U.S. products, specifically ultra-filtered milk. They also asked Trump to direct U.S. agencies to "examine a full range of tools that could be used immediately to impress upon Canada in a concrete way the importance of dependable two-way trade."
DAIRY Act expands H-2A for year-round use
Rep. Sean Duffy (R., Wis.) introduced the Defending the Agricultural Industry's Requirements Year-round Act of 2017 (DAIRY Act), which expands the H-2A worker program to benefit the nation's dairy farmers who have struggled to maintain a stable, legal workforce.

Currently, agricultural guest-worker programs do not work well for dairy because the industry is not seasonal. This bill modifies the existing visa program to allow dairy workers to hold a visa for 18 months, giving farmers certainty about the stability of their workforce.

"I'm proud to stand by Wisconsin dairy farmers to modernize our guest-worker program, because our farmers provide their products to market year-round, not just for a season. Dairy farmers and dairy workers alike deserve more certainty in this labor program, and my bill does just that," Duffy said in a statement.
