  Interview with Steel Magnolia's
Director Don Bachmann
by Rodrigo Pool

Don Bachmann is a retired professional director with over thirty plus years of experience as an Artistic/Managing Director and Executive Producer of SPT (Small Professional Theatres) and LORT (League of Resident Theatres). He holds a Master of Arts degree from Kansas University and has taught Theatre at the University of Texas and Richmond University. His Community Theatre experience is extensive; having directed over 140 productions from mainstream, to classics, and opera. He has received numerous awards including citations from the Governors of Kansas and Texas for his contributions to the arts. He has served on numerous not-for-profit boards and advisory panels including both the Kansas and Texas Commission for the Arts. He was Chairman of the American Association of Community Theatre's National Festival, served on its Executive Committee, chaired its Endowment, and was honored as a Fellow of AACT. His award winning theatre companies have toured nationally and represented the United States in the international arena. His love is creating art, but more importantly, helping others to achieve their theatrical dreams.

What motivated you to get into theater? Theatre Art is about creative expression that communicates ideas and feelings of value. I found this in sync with my own personal aspirations. I also discovered that my left/right brain tendencies were a good match for the demands of the theatre.

Who are some of your favorite directors? Who influences your work? My favorite directors are those that brought me along in my career. I remember my professors from academia who taught me the principles of directing and especially the professionals who took the time to mentor me and share their knowledge.

What can a person expect when they go to see
Steel Magnolias?
What I want the audience to see are real people fully engaging in life. I want them to experience both the joy and sadness of their own humanity.

Steel Magnolias first premiered Off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre, in New York City, on March 28, 1987. What makes this play so relevant today, over 30 years later? The play is about life...and living it to the fullest. Regardless of the time period, you can't get more relevant than that.

Steel Magnolias, though a play first, is also a beloved story due to the popularity of the 1989 film adaptation. How do you bring a fresh take to this show? Though people equate Steel Magnolias with the great performances in the film, the stage version is just as poignant. The play, accents the six female characters with all the action taking place in Truvy's Salon. We get to know them more completely and are offered insights that are not explored in the film. The play stands fully upon its own merits.

What was the number one quality you were looking for when casting Steel Magnolias? Believability...the characters are drawn from real people and I was looking for actresses who could play the character's inner truth.

What's your favorite quote from the show? and why? At the end of the play, M'Lynn simply states, "Life goes on. " I buy into that. I believe we should live our lives in the moment and for the moments that are yet to come. Life is a rich tapestry of thought, emotion and feelings...all those things that make us human.

What do you hope to take away from this experience? When I direct I seek to gain new insights. Character and theme are important to me and I enjoy delving into richly drawn characters with an author who writes on multiple levels. Whether it is a comedy or a heavy drama...there is always something to be learned.

Why would you recommend seeing this show and others at Faquier Community Theatre? If you think and feel, then Steel Magnolias is for you.

Producer Brooke Lyn Clark adds: "The story is truly genuine and sincere in the 'journey it travels' through every scene with displays of moments we as humans can relate to in our own lives. Make sure you bring your tissues and are ready to laugh with joy through tears! It's fixin' to be a grand ol' time" she says thematically with a radiant smile.

FCT's production o f Steel Magnolias is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

 ARTISTIC OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE
CREATIVE TYPES WELCOME!
   2018 - 2019

Producer opportunity is available for the production of
The Lion in Winter. The show will be performed from January 25 to February 10, 2019
.
The Lion in Winter by James Goldman, is a modern-day classic. Comedic in tone, dramatic in action - the play tells the story of the Plantagenet family, who are locked in a free-for-all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. The queen, and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Let out only for holidays, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom and King Henry's paramour during the Christmas of 1183. As Eleanor says, "Every family has its ups and downs," and this royal family is no exception.

Set Designer position is open for My Fair Lady. The show will be performed May 3 to May 19, 2019. When Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady opened on Broadway, it collected six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, while the film version took home eight Oscars, including Best Picture. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play  Pygmalion, My Fair Lady is that rare musical by which all others are measured. The tale of a cockney flower girl transformed into an elegant lady features some of musical theatre's greatest scores and beautiful sets.

Assistant Costumer and Seamstresses sought for overall productions and/or particular shows.

For more information about these volunteer positions, visit www.FCTstage.org or call 540-349-8760. director-items.jpg
