'Get on Track' with a Knowledge
Self-Assessment Focused on Preventive Care
MAFP President Sue Simmons
All Aboard! MAFP President Dr. Sue Simmons encourages everyone to register early.

This year's theme for our Annual Scientific Assembly is Get on Track with Family Medicine.  Dr. Sue Simmons helped  promote the meeting during the spring conference. Packets were handed out to attendees and mailed to other members last week. During the meeting, we will offer a Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) to meet certification requirements for American Board of Family Medicine. The  group KSA session will be held on Saturday, July 15 from 1-5 pm for only $100 (members) or $200 (non-members). This will be a one-day KSA Working Group Session focused on Preventive Care and it will be held at the convention location, the Baytowne Conference Center in Sandestin, FL. Plan to come a day early to knock out your requirements. You can register using the Scientific Assembly registration form. MAFP rooms are going quickly, and if you don't reserve early, you may not get the room you want, at the price you want, in the location you want. Click here for more information and to register.

MAFP Board Honors Retiring Chair of
UMMC Family Medicine, Dr. Diane Beebe
MAFP President Dr. Sue Simmons, UMMC Chair of Family Medicine Dr. Diane Beebe, and MAFP Delegate Dr. Luke Lampton.

The MAFP Board passed a resolution recognizing with distinction the contributions, loyalty and visionary leadership of Diane K. Beebe, MD, FAAFP to the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians.  She was recognized in person at the MAFP Board meeting and Spring Conference in April.

Dr. Beebe will retire June 30 after more than 30 years at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as a student, resident and faculty member, and most recently chair of the Department of Family Medicine.

Dr. Beebe was appointed chair of family medicine in 2007 after serving as interim chair for one year.  She joined the UMMC faculty in 1987 after completing medical school and her family medicine residency at UMMC.

Degree of Fellow Bestowed on
Four Mississippi Physicians
New Fellows Spring 2017
New Fellows of AAFP: Dr. Sonya Shipley, Dr. William Howard, Dr. Katherine Patterson and  Dr. Bradley Suggs.

Four Mississippi family physicians recently received the Degree of Fellow from AAFP. William P. Howard, MD, FAAFP, Katherine Patterson, MD, FAAFP, Bradley J. Suggs, MD, FAAFP and Sonya Shipley, MD, FAAFP were recognized April 23 in a Convocation Ceremony at the 2017 MAFP Spring Conference for achieving the Degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The Degree of Fellow recognizes AAFP members who have distinguished themselves among their colleagues, as well as in their communities, by their service to family medicine, by their advancement of health care to the American people, and by their professional development through medical education and research.  Fellows of the AAFP are recognized as champions of family medicine.  They are the physicians who make family medicine the premier specialty in service to their community and profession.  From a personal perspective, being a Fellow signifies not only "tenure" but one's additional work in your community, within organized medicine, within teaching and a great commitment to continuing professional development and/or research.

Criteria for receiving the AAFP Degree of Fellow consist of a minimum of six years of membership in the organization, extensive continuing medical education, participation in public service programs outside medical practice, conducting original research and serving as a teacher in family medicine.

The next Fellow ceremony will be at the 2017 Annual Scientific Assembly. Please email Claire if you would like to participate.

MAFP Board Members and Staff Attend
National Conferences
Kristen Kern, Dr. David Wheat, Dr. Katie Patterson, Dr. Sue Simmons, and Claire Rome

Several MAFP staff members as well as MAFP physician board members attended AAFP conferences held simultaneously in Kansas City last week.  The Annual Chapter Leader Forum (ACLF) is the AAFP's leadership development program for chapter-elected leaders, aspiring chapter leaders, and chapter staff.  Among other roles, ACLF functions as an orientation for emerging leaders who serve on chapter boards, as well as professional development for new and seasoned chapter staff.  New chapter staff members Kristen Kern, Public Awareness Director, and Claire Rome, Membership Director, attended an orientation session for new staff, then joined Beth Embry, Executive Director, Katie Patterson, MD, Board Vice President, and David Wheat, MD, Board Secretary for targeted breakout sessions on chapter governance, advocacy, and communication.

As an added bonus, your MAFP chapter was recognized in two ways. We received the first place award among medium sized chapters for the Highest Percent Retention of New Physicians in 2016 and for having 100% Resident Membership.

"I enjoyed networking with leaders from across the country," Patterson said. I was able to identify areas in my personal and professional life that could easily be improved by using technology which I was unaware of. Physician well-being is also forefront in my mind after encountering many fabulous speakers on this topic."

"This was such a wonderful meeting on so many fronts. The enthusiasm that everyone brought to the table on advocacy, burnout, constituency, and leadership was great", Wheat said. "We had exceptional speakers with some ideas that I can bring back and hopefully incorporate into my personal life, my leadership role and into our chapter. Kyle Maynard's motivational speech was truly inspirational. It also showed how we as family physicians can help our patients as they struggle through trying times. I would encourage anyone who can, to try to attend the conference in the future. It is well worth your time and effort."

Dr. Christy Vowell shows off her Tar Wars shirt and cap from NCCL.
National Conference of Constituency Leaders (NCCL) is the AAFP's leadership and policy development event for under-represented constituencies. NCCL serves as a platform for different perspectives and concerns of AAFP members to help bring about change.  Christy Vowell, DO, Director at Large, and Sue Simmons, MD, President, attended NCCL as constituency leaders for new physicians and women physicians respectively.

"I was impressed by the energy to pursue dramatic changes in Family Medicine with the Young Physicians constituency," Vowell said. "The influence of AAFP on a national political level was inspiring to me to know I have a voice. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting other family physicians across the nation who shared similar frustrations and opportunities. This conference was well worth attending!"

New Worry for Smokers: Thirdhand Smoke

Thirdhand smoke is generally considered to be residual nicotine and other chemicals left on a variety of indoor surfaces by tobacco smoke. This residue is thought to react with common indoor pollutants to create a toxic mix. This toxic mix of thirdhand smoke contains cancer-causing substances, posing a potential health hazard to nonsmokers who are exposed to it, especially children.

Studies show that thirdhand smoke clings to hair, skin, clothes, furniture, drapes, walls, bedding, carpets, dust, vehicles and other surfaces, even long after smoking has stopped. Infants, children and nonsmoking adults may be at risk of tobacco-related health problems when they inhale, ingest or touch substances containing thirdhand smoke. Thirdhand smoke is a relatively new concept, and researchers are still studying its possible dangers.
