BCP Unveils New Logo and Website
We are proud to present the new Baltimore Curriculum Project logo and website, which are the result of a six-month re-branding process led by Redstart Creative. The logo represents BCP's ongoing commitment to Baltimore City's children, families, and communities. The new website is chock-full of photos, news, and information about BCP's role as a leader in education reform.

SOURCE (Student Outreach Resource Center) donated five boxes of school supplies and sixty canned goods for families in need. SOURCE is the community engagement and service-learning center for the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, and the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. http://source.jhu.edu/
Haven City Church donated fifteen winter

St. Philip's Evangelical Lutheran Church donated $150 for Thanksgiving Dinner Service Learning Project supplies. St. Philip's Church is 127 years old and the second oldest African American congregation in the USA. http://www.stphilipslutheranch2.org

Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance (DBFA)
adopted seven City Springs families through their Adopt-A-Family program. DBFA's Adopt-a-family program works with local schools to identify families that need assistance with the holiday season. The schools vet qualified families; DBFA puts out a call for adopters; the amazing Baltimore community responds, purchases gifts for the families, and drops the gifts off at the school locations; and 500 families have a brighter December. DBFA also supports Govans Elementary and Wolfe Street Academy.

Baltimore City Awards BCP Grant to Run Frederick Elementary After-School Program
BCP has received a Baltimore City Community-Based Out-of-School Time (OST) Program grant of $56,000 to run a comprehensive after-school program at Frederick Elementary. The grant will be supplemented by a School Improvement Grant from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
The Frederick Elementary After School Program will improve student achievement in literacy, math, and science while providing a variety of engaging enrichment activities. The program will serve
100 K-5 students five days a week from 3:00pm-5:30pm.
Students will receive 25 minutes of English Language Arts/Core Knowledge instruction and 25 minutes of math instruction each day. Students will also engage in 40 minutes of hands-on STEM activities, one day a week, and 40 minutes of enrichment activities four days a week.
Enrichment activities are designed to reinforce and complement the day school's academic program and will include youth development and engagement activities, service-learning, art, music, urban gardening, violence prevention and debate. The program will also provide field trips, a nutritious snack, dinner, and activities that engage families and community members.
Frederick's after-school program will be based on best practices gleaned from BCP's after school programs at Govans Elementary and Wolfe Street Academy.

Govans Elementary Partners Promote Health, Fitness and Family
Govans Elementary and the Baltimore Curriculum Project would like to thank the following partners for promoting health, fitness, family and so much more.
Shaquil Barrett, outside linebacker for the Denver Broncos, sponsored "Donuts with Dads" on November 17, 2017. This annual event brought over 200 fathers to Govans Elementary for breakfast and an opportunity to become more involved with their children's school.

and Govans Elementary launched the Attendance Matters Challenge in September.
Students with perfect attendance for the month are entered into a drawing for tickets to shows, concerts, movies, and other events. Parents who attend Parent/Teacher Organization meetings are also entered into ticket drawings. The perfect attendance winners for November were

The Italian Cultural Center of Maryland's Be a Chef for a Day Program began working with Govans Elementary School in October. This popular weekly activity called "Mr. Brown, The Grocery Bag Cooking Club" inspires students to make healthy food choices and to experience the joy and creativity of healthy cooking. Govans chefs have prepared a variety of dishes including sautéed chicken breasts with snow peas and
a plantain side dish, and hand-made veggie tagliatelle with beets and spices. This partnership was developed by Sandi McFadden, Strong City Baltimore Community School Coordinator at Govans Elementary.

Hampstead Hill Academy's Math Rumble Rocks

HHA's 2017 Math Rumble.

Mr. Tony Berry booms, "Leeetttt's get ready to rummmmmmble!" and with that the 17th Annual Hampstead Hill Academy (HHA) Math Rumble was off and running.
The Math Rumble is sort of like a spelling bee, but with math facts instead of words. Students in grades 1-4 compete through several rounds of math problems and there are winners based on the groups with the highest percent of students left standing.
Students get to practice in a public speaking setting, and everyone receives a certificate of participation.
The Math Rumble is an opportunity to practice getting comfortable with public speaking and practice basic math facts; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Wolfe Street Academy Students Enjoy Sailing and STEM with Downtown Sailing Center
Wolfe Street Academy just completed another wonderful season of sailing and STEM instruction with the Downtown Sailing Center (DSC). Since 2016, the Downtown Sailing Center has engaged Wolfe students in free after-school STEM-based activities twice a week. During the warmer months, students go sailing in the harbor.
The Downtown Sailing Center launched its STEM Initiative in 2013 with a pilot week-long STEM Summer camp for youth. This program utilizes the Reach curriculum, developed by US Sailing, to combine their love of sailing with STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) principles. This curriculum uses a set of modules, activities completed on land and on water, to teach students about the world around them. The program was very successful and has been offered every summer since.
In an effort to expand the outreach, in the spring of 2016, the DSC launched its first after school program in collaboration with Wolfe Street Academy. Through the school's after school program, they offered a STEM Sailing course twice a week for the spring semester, providing the elementary students with quality sailing instruction and STEM education.
In the fall of 2016, DSC took on an even more ambitious project. In addition to continuing to provide an after school activity with Wolfe Street Academy, they launched a comprehensive after school program at Bay Brook Elementary and Middle School. This program not only provides students with the opportunity to learn STEM subjects and sailing, but also supplies them with educational enrichment, homework help, dinner, and physical activity.
DSC is the only community sailing center in Baltimore City and the only access point to the water for most in the community. Their mission is to make the joy of sailing accessible to everyone, regardless of age, income, ability or disability. Program revenues, grants and the sweat equity of their numerous member volunteers help them carry out that mission in large part, but not completely.
