NAAB Annual Meeting
The NAAB Board of Directors met in Philadelphia on October 18-19, 2019, for its annual meeting. At the meeting, among other things, the board

  • Approved revisions to the Rules of the Board.
  • Received end-of-year reports from committees and task forces.
  • Welcomed the new directors to the board.
  • Transitioned from the 2018-19 governance year to the 2019-20 governance year.

The next board meeting is scheduled in Nashville on January 31-February 1, 2020. 
Interim Executive Director Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, to Depart NAAB
After serving as the NAAB’s interim executive director for two years, Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, will end her term on November 15, 2019. At the October board meeting, President Sestak and Past President Flynn presented Dreiling with a presidential citation to recognize her service:

In recognition of her outstanding leadership and stewardship in guiding a significant cultural and organizational transformation of the NAAB during a crucial moment in its history. This transformation will have long-term implications for the NAAB.

During her tenure Helene forged relationships among her staff, the NAAB Board of Directors, visiting team members, volunteers, and our collateral partners that will be long lasting. Her dedication to transparency and inclusiveness is a model for our professional organizations.

The NAAB is a new organization because of her work, and the academy and profession are both beneficiaries as the NAAB moves forward with a more flexible and innovative accreditation process promoting excellence and innovation in architectural education.

2019 Annual Statistical Report Reminder
The 2019 Annual Statistical Report opened on Friday, August 30, 2019. Every accredited program, and those in candidacy, is required to complete and submit an annual report by November 30. If you are responsible for the report and have not received any emails about it, please check your spam folders and then send an email to annualreport@naab.org .

Programs that have a two-year or five-year Interim Progress Report due in 2019 can download a school-specific template file in the ARS, under the school management tab. The IPR is also due on November 30, 2019.
Remembering David Biagi, AIA
The NAAB is saddened to share the news that noted architect and professor at the University of Kentucky, David Biagi, AIA, died of thyroid cancer on October 20, 2019, surrounded by his wife and children at his home in Todds Point, Kentucky. David was a devoted NAAB team member, serving on eight visiting teams, as both a member and team chair. Most recently, David’s drawings from graduate school were purchased by MOMA as an example of early experiments in computation, and David was fortunate to attend the MOMA Artist Party in October.
