DVAR TORAH

Towards the end of this week's parsha, we are told of Yaakov's descent to Egypt with his entire family. The Torah tells us (Bereshit 46:28) that at the onset of his journey, Yaakov sent his son Yehuda ahead "to point the way before him." According to one view in the Midrash, cited by Rashi, this refers to the establishment of a Torah educational facility. According to this interpretation, Yaakov made education his priority in preparing for his family's sojourn in the foreign environs and culture of Egypt. On a much simpler level, Yehudah, who is cited by various midrashim as being the most powerful of the brothers, was sent to ensure the safety and security of Bnei Yisroel when they entered Egypt.

In truth, these two missions - to provide security and to build an educational institution - must go hand in hand. Educational institutions are the foundation of every community, but a school requires a safe and secure environment in order to thrive.

At Hillel we strive to maintain a safe environment for our students from the moment that they are dropped off until they are returned to you safely. On that note, I would like to take a moment to remind everyone about some of our safety procedures that we can all keep in mind during drop off and dismissal.

* Please do not make U-turns in front of our building. Cars coming up the street do not see you and this may cause an accident, and/or injure a student.

Please do not back up in our pickup line. Cars do not expect this and it can be very dangerous.

When you walk to pick up your child, please be extra vigilant and make sure to keep an eye on your child.

Please remember to sign out your child when they have an early dismissal. If for some reason there is no one at the front desk, please sign them out on the sign out clipboard and tell someone in the front office.

Thank you very much for your cooperation. Have a wonderful Shabbat,

Rabbi Weinberg, Principal

Ice Skating Trip

The First - Twelfth Grade Girls and First - Fourth Grade Boys had a fabulous time at the Ice Castle in the South Hills on Monday. With the rink to ourselves and music to skate to for hours, no wonder everyone was tired in the afternoon! Rabbi Weinberg even took to the ice on Facebook Live and took requests from anyone who wanted to spot their child having fun! If they're not in any of these photos it's because they were going too fast to capture on film :-)

Professor Garwouldhe Youbetterbelieveit taught a class in Firestick Tech and Alchemical Magic to the Middle School Girls. He cautions that this art should be used only on special occasions and never in small, enclosed spaces, such as cupboards under stairs and the like. Much practice is needed before the girls receive their certification in Flamology and the Explosive Arts.  In addition to correct posture and wand movement, the girls must learn to say "Ta-Da!" with the right intonation. In the meantime, if you spy any fireballs lingering in the hallways, please return them to the Science Lab. Likewise, if you spot any girls with singed eyebrows, JUST IGNORE IT.

FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE SCHOOL YEAR 2018-2019

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh awards grants to students who reside in the Greater Pittsburgh area (Allegheny, Butler, Beaver, Washington and Westmoreland Counties).

WHAT IS THE CENTRAL SCHOLARSHIP AND LOAN REFERRAL SERVICE?

The Central Scholarship and Loan Referral Service (CSLRS) of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh coordinates the efforts of a group of organizations, agencies, and scholarship endowment funds which provide need-based scholarships to local undergraduate and graduate Jewish students.
CSLRS is a program of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and is administered by Jewish Family and Children's Service.

WHO QUALIFIES?

Any Jewish high school senior, college or graduate student with demonstrated financial need is eligible to apply. All applicants must be bona fide residents of Allegheny, Beaver, Washington, Butler or Westmoreland counties for at least two years. Individuals are known by number, not name, to ensure confidentiality.

When a student applies for aid, the CSLRS committee matches the student with the funding source or sources for which they qualify. Some funding sources require high academic achievement; all require students to demonstrate financial need.

HOW DO I APPLY?

For school year 2018-2019 Central Scholarship will again be using an on-line application process.
The on-line applications will be available in late November at http://www.centralscholarship.org . First-time applicants must be interviewed by CSLRS staff.

Application deadline is February 12, 2018. Regrettably, applications received after that date will not be considered.

At Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh, we educate young men and women with unlimited capacity who compete in a superior manner in all challenges undertaken. Our students are Torah observant models of exemplary character, who love G-d, the Jewish people, and the land of Israel. To say that our students possess a love of learning, confidence and the ability to think critically, merely highlights the value of a Hillel education. What we ultimately achieve each day, and have been achieving for 70 years, is the gift of instilling each student with the foundation for a life spent actively serving and leading the Jewish community and society.
