Yearbook sales dates are established in accordance with state tax policies.
Yearbooks are sold before school, during break, during lunch, and after school in the Activity Center  with a check made out to BHS or  pay online on   THE SOURCE  & SchoolPay.

Please be  sure to update any forms that apply to your family and return to the school office by 10/12. LIBRARY NEWS

Ballard High School Library has started the 2018 school year like a Vin Diesel movie-- Fast and Furious! Students and staff are loving the flexible learning spaces and new furniture. The Makerspace is off to a hot start with students leading workshops and teachers using it for a class to show alternate ways of thinking. We have already finished a puzzle to compete in the SPS Great Puzzle Challenge and a Rubik's Cube team is in the process of being formed for an upcoming competition. Ballard Virtual Reality Club has started meeting on Thursday afternoons and is eagerly awaiting the delivery of 35 Oculus Go's and two Oculus Rifts while they plan to create a VR Haunted House for Ballard Students at Halloween. The Beaver Book Club has started meeting on first Fridays and first lunch is reading Born a Crime and the second lunch is deciding between three books. FOR STUDENTS
SPS Skills Center Sign up NOW! | Check out the Seattle Public Schools Skills Center, which offers career-connected learning opportunities. Applications for our free school year courses are available online, and paper applications are available in your school counselors's office. Our advanced, technical courses prepare students for college, careers, and life.
  • SPS Students who are 16 to 20 years old may take school-year Skills Center courses
  • Van, school bus, or taxi transportation is provided to and from Skills Center courses from a student's home school
  • Classes run 2.5 hours, Monday through Friday
  • Students earn high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) credit
  • Some courses offer chances to earn math, science or English high school credit, free college credit and industry certifications
  • Students may take a Skills Center course at any location, regardless of the high school they attend
  • Sign up online at http://skillscenter.seattleschools.org/ or use a paper application, and talk to your school counselor to make sure the class fits your schedule.
  • Tuesday, September 18 is the last day for adding a new class for this semester.
ACADEMICS
PSAT | All 10th & 11th graders at BHS can take the PSAT on Wednesday, 10/10. There is no charge for the test and all students are automatically registered. Specific details coming in the next few weeks! For more information click HERE

College Visits |  College admission representatives will be visiting BHS during the coming months. The list is growing! Click  HERE  to view the current list. Please sign up in the notebook in the Counseling Office and follow the directions in the notebook. The list is updated frequently and can be accessed under  the  Helpful  Links  section on the right-hand side of this newsletter.

COLLEGE PLANNING
College Planning Class  | 9/24, 7 p.m. at Lynnwood Library. This information-packed class will focus on high school juniors and will address the following:
  • How to pick a college that is a good academic, social, and financial fit. 
  • Why procrastination may cost a family thousands of dollars. 
  • Why standardized tests are important and which one to take SAT/ACT.
  • How to maximize your student's potential to receive scholarships, grants, and other forms of gift-aid. 
  • Illustrate to families how to attend a PRIVATE COLLEGE for a Public College Price. 
No Matter How Much Money You Make or How Good Your Student Is, This Class Is for YOU! Classes are free, but reservations are necessary. ATHLETICS
Come and support all our Ballard Athletic Teams! Visit the Metroleague site for the most current schedules and the Athletic Booster Club (ABC) site for team updates and to purchase Beaver Gear too!  
Cross Country news | The BHS cross country team has an unprecedented turnout this year with over 160 athletes. 120 of them came to our opener 5k at Lower Woodland on 9/12/18. It was a very successful time for  all three of our teams:
  • The boys Varsity  and JV in 1st place
  • The girls Varsity and JV in 1st place

basketball_wood_floor.jpg Boys BasketballAll boys interested in playing basketball. Open gyms are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:45 a.m. and strength and conditioning every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7 a.m. If you haven't signed up yet, see Mr. Broom for questions in SW207.

Girls BasketballAll girls interested in playing basketball, please join us for Open Gyms on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:30-9 p.m. from Sept 10th- Nov 5. We also recommend participating in the Strength and Conditioning program one to three days per week that is offered Mondays-Fridays 7-8:15 a.m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays 3:45-4:45 p.m. Winter season tryouts are Nov 12-14. Goodwill Truck | 
9/22 in the BHS parking lot, 2-5 p.m.  Please set aside your items for donations until then.  Ballard Performing Arts  will receive a donation of at least $500 from Goodwill.  They will accept small furniture (no large furniture please), electronics, used cell phones, clothes, shoes, toys, kitchen items, etc. 

SERVICE LEARNING
One of the graduation requirements for the Seattle School District is 60 hours of service learning. Service learning is giving time, without pay, to a nonprofit or government agency. Service learning allows students to learn and to apply academic, social, and personal skills through real hands-on activities. Students make a difference and address authentic community needs. As part of service learning, students are asked to reflect and report on their experiences.  Special recognition is given to students who have acquired 240 hours of service learning in their 4 years at Ballard High School. They will be recognized at the Senior Academic Awards Night.

Our fantastic librarian, TuesD, is looking for ongoing help to shelve books, weed and repair books, organize the Makerspace, and help with signage.  Come once or come on a regular basis! Curriculum Night Volunteers | 9/27 (6:15-7:30 p.m.) Main floor or 2nd floor foyer area.  Can you help on Curriculum Night? We need a few enthusiastic parents to sell Planners (a fantastic academic organizing tool) and hand out school photos. We need you! KBFG & Sustainable Ballard Fall Festival | 9/22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.  KBFG will be set up under a tent, adjacent to and powered by solar electric panels on the Solar 2You trailer. The Solar trailer will be set up  and run by former BHS Teacher Eric Muhs  for fun experiences to teach the kids about solar energy."  Come by and meet folks from  KBFG community radio 107.3 fm  the newest radio station broadcasting to north Seattle neighborhoods. 

Outreach Program for Soccer, TOP Soccer | A community-based soccer program for boys and girls who have a cognitive and/or physical disability. Wildcats TOP Soccer is looking for teen volunteers who are interested in sports, education, or people with disabilities to be buddies to assist players on the field. Students do not need to be soccer players themselves to help. The fall season runs from 9/9 through 10/28 with practices on Sundays from 3:30-4:30 PM and from 4:30-5:30 PM indoors at Arena Sports at Magnuson Park, Seattle (7751 63rd Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115). Buddies can help with one or both groups. If you are interested, contact Kathleen Kindred. There is no fee for buddies, but you need to register online at  Shoreline TOPS soccer. This soccer team is a part of Washington Youth Soccer Association (WYSA).

Seattle JazzED | is a nonprofit music education organization in the Central District/Madison Valley. We're dedicated to creating awesome opportunities for kids. Over 900 students from 100+ schools come through our doors annually. You pay-what-you-can for any Seattle JazzED program, with free instrument loan assistance.
 
GIRLS JAZZ DAY - SATURDAY, SEPT 29
Join us for one day, 100% dedicated to girls who play jazz. You'll become an expert at jam sessions, improvisation and being confident in navigating solos and band leadership. You'll learn the basics and then build on them with top female jazz educators, including Kelly Clingan, Johnaye Kendrick, Marina Albero & Kate Olson. Open to grades 6-12, all instruments (including string instruments AND voice). OneWorld Now! Global Leadership Program - Accepting applications! | In the Global Leadership Program, you will take after-school language classes in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, or Russian two days a week. Every other week, you'll come together with peers from across Seattle for leadership workshops that build positive social identities, intercultural sensitivity, and global citizenship. In the summer, nominated students have the opportunity to study abroad with either OneWorld Now! or a partner program. Schedule depends on the language you wish to study. The schedule is available on our website. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, 10/2 and there is a mandatory orientation on Friday, 10/12. Penguin Productions  |  Penguin Productions invites students interested in theater, management, and/or design to register for behind-the-scenes roles on our fall production of The Importance of Being Earnest  performing  November 2-4. Service learning hours available. Rehearsals begin September 17.
Performs at Taproot Theatre's Isaac Studio: November 3 at 7pm, November 4 at 2pm and 7pm. Learn more and register HERE.

Penguin is also hosting two workshops this fall for ages 14-25:  Applying to/Surviving College Theater Programs (September 29) , and an  Audition Workout (September 30). You can register for one or both.  Whether you are are prepping for a specific audition or just want to have some fun with monologues, these workshops offer an opportunity to work in a supportive, inclusive community.  There is no financial obligation for any Penguin Production opportunities. Participation in student-oriented activities is a vital part of every student's education. BHS provides a wide range of activities for your student to thrive at school, make new friends, and engage with staff. 

Black Student Union meets after school on Tuesdays in SW105 .  There will be snacks! Everyone welcome. See Mr. Macdougall if you have any questions.
