Terry's Blue Pedal Car

Terry Gentry is a local gentleman who lives ten minutes from the Tapeworks shop here in central North Carolina, and a few months ago, he came by the shop and said he had a pedal car he needed a sticker for.

Now, Terry's retired, and in his retirement he has taken to restoring old tin pedal cars. "I started two years ago restoring the pedal cars.  Before that I restored antique cars and built two street rods that appeared in two magazines, Mopar Collectors Guide (March 1998) and Mopar Action Magazine (June 2010).  I've had two back surgeries recently and since I have always liked old pedal cars, I started collecting and decided to try restoring.  I fell in love.  I had one as a child and am now restoring for myself and others."

He'll buy a rusty, ramshackle car, sand it, prime it, paint it, and make it look good as new again.  "I search all over for them and have found rare ones in other states. I start by disassembling them completely to determine what has to be replaced and always try to use original parts if I can.  Then I sandblast, fix all dents and rust spots, prime and hand sand, paint in a booth with automotive paint and clear coat, and then reassemble.  It usually takes 3 months to 1 year to complete one."

Terry needed custom sized headlight and taillight decals, plus he wanted a faux-wood panel sticker for the side of this car, something similar to how it came originally. So Rob copied the shape of the original sticker onto a sheet of paper, brought it into the computer, and doctored it up to look like something out of the 1950s. He even went so far as to turn the faux screw heads so they aren't all facing the same direction.

Back in October, Terry invited us over to his shop to take some photos of the finished car, and all we can say is WOW!! The paint looks amazing. Can't you just see yourself in a picture out of Time magazine, circa 1952, staring through the window at Sears Roebuck at something like this? We certainly can.

This pedal car was restored for the owner of Unique Antiques in Beulaville, NC and is on display there for your viewing pleasure.

If you have a pedal car that you want restored to better than new condition, or want to purchase one that Terry has in his collection, you can email him at [email protected] or give him a call at 919-606-7536.
