Let's Talk About the Environmental
Impact
of 'Black Friday'
Black Friday and Cyber Monday are right around the corner. That means millions of Americans will be storming the doors of malls and department stores to satisfy consumer desires. This trend negatively impacts more than just your wallet.
The amount of toxic materials needed to create the electronics, clothing and household items Americans are buying and the fossil fuels needed to transport them leaves a lasting mark on our planet.

Butte County Teachers Love R.A.R.E.
" We were beyond excited to learn about recycling and composting from Julia through the RARE program. She provided so much knowledge to myself and my class. We are enthusiastically making steps in the right direction to help make our lives more sustainable. My students loved the lesson so much that many of them were taking notes! Thank you for the positive impact that the RARE program had on my class. "

BEC representatives have continued to follow urgent water and development issues in Butte County. Supervisors Debra Lucero and Tami Ritter have voted to end the feasibility study of the Tuscan Water District, which would bring Paradise Irrigation District water to Chico. The reason for this halt being the lack of clarity on who would benefit from this water arrangement and ultimately who's voices are involved in this decision that affects Butte County residents.
The Board of Supervisors will hold Tuscan Water District public forum on December 17th to discuss this issue with more transparency.
If you have interest in joining BEC's Water Advocacy Committee, please reach out to us and we will let you know our progress.

A Message On Sustainability from High School Student Neil Bajaj
My name is Neil and I was born in Chico. I love Chico, and I am interested in making our town and the environment that surrounds us more sustainable. I have already started implementing sustainability measures within my school, in the form of my club, S.I.P.S (Student Integrated Peer Sustainability Club). Some of the things I will be implementing within the next year, a recycling programs within Chico High. From there, I would like to make a push for the rest of the schools within the Chico Unified School District to have a sustainability program and to increase the awareness of all the citizens of Chico. We, the people most definitely have a lot of work ahead of us, but most of it starts with simple education and awareness. The more of us there are to educate our peers, the quicker we will see a change, for the better, within our environment.

Neil Bajaj is a youth environmental advocate who will be contributing to BEC’s monthly newsletter. He will be covering topics regarding important environmental issues.
